About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Prepare for Pickleball Tournaments – What Dierk Hohman Learned the Hard Way

If you’re new to pickleball tournaments, welcome to the adventure! My wife and I dove into our first tournament with high spirits and a love for the game—but let’s just say, we were under-prepared. After learning some tough lessons the hard way, I want to share some must-know tips that will help you feel ready and confident on game day.

1. Arrive Early for Check-In & Court Assignments

Tournament days are busy, and check-in is rarely a quick process. Parking isn’t always right next to your assigned court, and you don’t want to feel rushed before your first match. Arriving early ensures you have enough time to check in, find your court, and mentally prepare.

2. Bring a Fully Stocked Cooler

Even if the tournament promises “food will be provided,” don’t rely on it. I’ve been to tournaments where the food ran out or the lines at food trucks were too long to grab a bite between matches. Bring a cooler packed with plenty of snacks, meals, and water to keep your energy up throughout the day.

3. Pack Comfortable Outdoor Chairs

Most outdoor venues don’t provide seating. After hours of standing or playing, you’ll be grateful for a lightweight, easy-to-carry chair where you can rest between matches.

4. Bring a Basic First Aid Kit & Extra Essentials

Be prepared for small hiccups by packing essentials like extra socks, shoelaces, band-aids, pain relievers, and even athletic tape. Minor discomforts can become major distractions, so having these items on hand can save the day.

5. Wear Sport-Specific Sunscreen

Not all sunscreens are created equal. If you use one that isn’t designed for sports, you might find your grip getting slippery or your eyes stinging from sweat. Choose a high-quality, sweat-resistant sunscreen to stay protected without sacrificing your game.

6. Bring a Portable Phone Charger

Many tournament venues don’t have power outlets, and most events communicate schedules and updates via your phone. A dead battery can leave you scrambling, so a portable charger is a tournament essential.

7. Pack a Comfy Pair of Slip-On Shoes

After a long day on the court, your feet will thank you for a comfortable pair of slip-on shoes. Switching out of your court shoes gives your feet a break and makes the post-tournament relaxation even better.

Final Thoughts

Preparation can make or break your tournament experience. By learning from my mistakes and packing these essentials, you’ll be ready to focus on what truly matters—playing your best pickleball and having a great time! Good luck out there!
