According to an AdvancedMD survey of medical group owners and staff, nearly 60% of respondents report implementing telehealth tools to support their practice’s mental health offerings
AdvancedMD, a provider of cloud-based healthcare software for independent medical practices, today released findings from its survey on the intersection of healthcare technology and behavioral health services. After polling more than 200 medical group owners and staff, AdvancedMD found that 67% of respondents report their practice employs at least one mental health specialist. Fifteen percent of survey respondents said that while they do not have a mental health provider on staff, they do screen for mental health issues.
According to Mental Health America’s 2024 State of Mental Health in America report, nearly a quarter of U.S. adults experienced a mental illness in 2023. Additionally, one in five children between the ages of 12 and 17 had at least one major depressive episode the same year, but fewer than half received any mental health treatment. Meanwhile, Mental Health America’s data shows that more than 122 million Americans live in a mental health workforce shortage area.
The AdvancedMD survey highlights a significant shift in the ambulatory care community, with more healthcare providers expanding their services to include behavioral health offerings. When asked which technology solutions have been implemented to support behavioral health services, 58% of respondents cited telehealth platforms—more than double the percentage of respondents who cited digital screening and assessment tools.
“Our survey findings signal a much-needed transformation in the healthcare space, with providers seeking new ways to address the mental health needs of their patients. At AdvancedMD, we have always prioritized unified solutions that can be customized to meet the unique needs of every private practice, including mental health-specific solutions,” said Amanda Sharp, CEO, AdvancedMD. “Our telehealth tools, our customizable workflows, and our medical billing solutions are designed to support behavioral healthcare, enabling our clients to deliver a more holistic patient experience. The telehealth component is especially impactful considering the convenience and flexibility it offers, while also making it possible to provide mental health services in rural areas that may lack access to mental health specialists.”
Another key finding from the survey: Nearly 70% of respondents report that patients request telehealth appointments for mental health services on a weekly or daily basis. Among the respondents receiving telehealth requests for mental health appointments, 38% receive requests daily.
AdvancedMD also discovered that healthcare technology is helping support positive mental health outcomes, with more than 60% of survey respondents ranking their practice’s digital tools as “very effective” or “somewhat effective” at identifying and supporting patients' mental health needs.
