Hidden A Novel of Love Ambition and Secrets in 1920s New York

Victoria Lustbader, an accomplished editor-turned-novelist has written a stunning literary novel, Hidden, a sweeping and emotionally rich story set against the vibrant backdrop of 1920s New York City. From the sweatshops of the Lower East Side to the lavish drawing rooms of Manhattan’s elite, Hidden immerses readers in a time of immense cultural change, family conflict, and forbidden passion.

With masterful prose and cinematic detail, Lustbader weaves the lives of two interconnected families, the working-class Warshinskys and the aristocratic Gateses, into a powerful narrative exploring ambition, loyalty, identity, and the cost of silence. Through wartime bonds, clandestine desires, and personal sacrifices, Hidden unfolds a dramatic tale of hope and heartbreak.

At the heart of the story is the unlikely friendship between Jed Gates, heir to a powerful family legacy, and David Warshinsky, the driven son of Jewish immigrants. Their shared experiences in the trenches of World War I forge a lifelong bond, one tested by social barriers, personal ambition, and hidden longing. Meanwhile, David’s sister Sarah navigates the perils of sweatshop labor and emotional betrayal, finding solace in the arms of a kindhearted immigrant tailor. Jed’s sister Lucy, a forward-thinking nurse at Margaret Sanger’s birth control clinic, dares to love a man who can never truly be hers.

As the characters grapple with identity, class, and desire, Lustbader shines a light on the deep emotional and societal divisions of the Jazz Age, many of which still echo in today’s world.

"Hidden is both panoramic and intimate,” says literary critic Elaine Rivers. “It’s an emotional page-turner with unforgettable characters and a haunting sense of place. Lustbader’s historical insight and lyrical storytelling mark her as a major new voice in literary fiction.”

Victoria Lustbader brings a rich background in publishing to her fiction, having been a fiction editor for over a decade, at Harper & Row, Analog Magazine, and then Senior Editor at the Berkley Publishing Group. She is also known for her work in environmentalism with The Nature Conservancy. Lustbader currently resides on the East End of Long Island with her husband, bestselling author Eric Van Lustbader.
