"He Will Grow Out of It": Author Eldot (Leland Hall) Invites Readers to Rediscover the Humor and Humanity of Growing Up

The retired educator-turned-novelist reframes adolescence as a season of curiosity, comedy, and self-discovery—where laughter and empathy do the teaching.

PORTLAND, OR, November 17, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In a world of constant screens and fleeting attention, adolescence has never been more complicated—or more overlooked. Modern teens are surrounded by noise but rarely given the quiet space to ask who they truly are. Against that backdrop, retired teacher and novelist Leland Hall, known by his pen name Eldot, offers something refreshingly human: stories that remind readers of the joy, chaos, and confusion of growing up—and why it all matters.

Hall's acclaimed Julian's Private Scrapbook series blends humor, tenderness, and insight to capture the messy beauty of adolescence in the pre–cell phone 1960s.

"Back then," Hall reflects, "young people had time to think, to discover themselves. Today's digital world rarely allows that. My stories invite readers—young and old—to slow down and remember what real discovery feels like."

Comedy as a Compass

Hall's choice to write a comedy was deliberate.

"Fun and frolic lead to self-discovery," he explains. "The reader shares the experience rather than observing it. The message is not delivered—it is discovered."

The books follow Julian and his friends through comic misadventures, awkward crushes, and small moral crossroads that shape identity. The humor is not decoration—it is the language of understanding.

"Naughty and nice has always been the American way," Hall adds. "Mark Twain proved it with Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. My stories follow that same tradition. They are not morality plays. They are invitations to laugh, learn, and grow."

Julian's Story: Curiosity, Courage, and the Craft of Empathy

Hall's five-part series—Barr's Meadow, The Poker Club, The Shooting Gallery, Thunder and Lightning, and The Champions—portrays adolescence with candor and compassion. The books explore confusion, awakening, and friendship with humor and heart.

They are intended for mature readers—not as a warning, but as a frame. A reminder that this is literature, not lure; empathy, not titillation.

"These stories are not about scandal," Hall says. "They are about understanding. Curiosity, embarrassment, affection—these are universal experiences. We need to talk about them honestly and provide counsel where it is needed."

A Pen Name with Purpose

The name "Eldot"—a phonetic spelling of "L."—began as a thoughtful safeguard. When Hall released his first novel, Barr's Meadow (2011), the subject matter was considered taboo.

"I used a pseudonym not to hide," he says, "but to protect others. I did not want my former colleagues blamed for my approach, and I did not want media sensationalism to distort my intent."

Now, as both Eldot and Leland Hall, he speaks with even more clarity.

"The so-called taboos have been co-opted by smartphones and the internet," he notes. "Now the problem is the opposite—too much exposure, too little understanding. My work gives readers permission to feel and think again."

A Mission to Educate Through Laughter

What began as storytelling has become a form of teaching. Hall's background as a high school English and Drama teacher fuels his empathy for young people who feel unseen.

"We have not trained teachers or parents to understand what is really happening in the hearts and minds of young people," he says. "We tell them they will 'grow out of it,' but that is how we lose them."

His goal is simple: to help readers—teenagers, parents, and adults—replace judgment with patience, laughter, and love.

"Ignoring what is real endangers today's youth," Hall says. "Understanding and humor are the real safeguards."

A Mirror for Readers of Every Age

The Julian's Private Scrapbook series portrays early experiences of attraction, confusion, and curiosity with unflinching candor. Hall emphasizes that this is a frame crafted as literature and nothing more.

The specificity of these experiences gives the books their pulse and purpose. Beneath the humor and nostalgia, they address real human struggles that remain as urgent today as they were 60 years ago.

The stories seek not only to entertain but also to enlighten and motivate—inviting readers to rediscover their own passage from innocence to understanding and to see adolescence as a mirror of our shared humanity.
