A transformative 10-day journey uniting Diaspora travelers with Sierra Leone's rich history, culture, beaches, and communities—featuring historical tours, a business expo, artifact dedication, documentary filming, and Independence Day celebration.
SAVANNAH, GA, December 01, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect proudly announces its 10-day Heritage & Legacy Tour to Sierra Leone, taking place April 22 through May 1, 2026. Limited to just 30 participants, this immersive experience creates a powerful bridge between the African Diaspora and its Sierra Leonean roots.
What sets this tour apart is its fusion of purpose and experience: a business expo, a major fundraising effort, a landmark artifact dedication, documentary filming, and participation in Sierra Leone's 65th Independence Day celebration. It is a journey of contrasts: from a solemn remembrance at the ruins of Bunce Island to breathtaking sunsets, bonfires, and peaceful reflection on Mozza Beach.
Rooted in the shared story of the Gullah Geechee people, whose ancestors were taken from Sierra Leone's rice-growing regions to the coastal Carolinas and Georgia, and various Caribbean destinations, including Jamaica, Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti), Grenada, and Barbados. This tour strengthens the historical, agricultural, and cultural ties that bind both communities across the Atlantic.
Business Expo & Diaspora Investment Exchange
Hosted at Fourah Bay College, the Business Expo connects global entrepreneurs with Sierra Leonean innovators, educators, and business leaders. The tour aligns with Sierra Leone's national tourism strategy. Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Tunis, recently declared 2025 the "Year of Ecotourism," noting: "Once known as the Athens of Africa, Sierra Leone is reclaiming its rightful place on the global stage this time using tourism, culture, and conservation as its springboard." Designed to spark diaspora-to-local partnerships, the Expo encourages investment in agriculture, technology, tourism, and cultural industries—echoing the entrepreneurial legacy of ancestors who brought rice cultivation expertise to America.
Fundraiser for Tasso Island
Each participant contributes directly to infrastructure improvements on Tasso Island, home to more than 5,500 residents. Funds raised will support clean water, solar power, sanitation, educational upgrades, and internet connectivity—ensuring that descendants give back to the communities from which many African American, Afro-Carribbean, and British-African ancestors originated. If you are unable to tour with us, please consider a tax-deductible contribution to support Tasso Island.
Artifact Dedication & Documentary Filming
The tour will feature a landmark dedication ceremony in Freetown for artifacts that will be permanently installed at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park (HMFP) in Hilton Head, South Carolina—the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved Africans in the U.S. The installation symbolizes a spiritual homecoming for the African American community. These events will be captured in the documentary Bridging Freedom, which explores the enduring cultural continuum between Sierra Leone and the Gullah Geechee corridor from North Carolina to Florida.
Sierra Leone's 65th Independence Day Celebration
Participants will join national celebrations on April 27, experiencing Sierra Leone's vibrant culture, musical traditions, and expressions of freedom—deeply resonant with the Gullah Geechee communities who continue to preserve West African language, spirituality, cuisine, and storytelling.
Reserve Your Place
Curated by SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect, an international collaboration of leaders from the U.S., U.K., and Sierra Leone, the tour offers a rare cross-continental experience. Executive Director Marva Goldsmith shares: "This is a historic journey of heritage, entrepreneurship, and renewal—where Gullah Geechee legacy meets Sierra Leone's living history, and the past inspires a powerful future on both sides of the Atlantic."
Participation is limited to 30 travelers. A $300 tax-deductible deposit secures your spot and is a contribution to life-affirming projects for the Tasso Island community.
