From Military Service to Building Laboratories

Mr. Nierva earned a Bachelor of Science in public health and preventive medicine before taking graduate courses in immunology and biochemistry. He served in the United States Navy and trained in field medical services with the United States Marine Corps. This experience formed core values in discipline and organization. Mr. Nierva subsequently completed specialized coursework and certifications in histopathology and laboratory management at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. After eight years of service in the U.S. Navy, part of which he spent as a histotechnologist and a pathologist's assistant at Bethesda Naval Hospital, he gained an understanding of what makes an effective organizational structure and design engineering of laboratory infrastructure building.

A Wide-Ranging Career in Laboratory Medicine

After concluding his education, Mr. Nierva entered positions at several laboratories, hospitals and technical services organizations. Mr. Nierva has operated as a consultant, supervisor, manager, director and specialist throughout these operations, and he soon found a role as a laboratory builder. His expertise in design engineering and infrastructure planning began in 1988 with laboratory organizational restructuring and complete lab builds for several prominent organizations, including Kaiser Permanente-Mid-Atlantic and Inova Health System in Northern Virginia, among others. Equipped with a passion for building and improving laboratory systems in the U.S., he has helped many institutions to find success.

Most recently, in 2016, Mr. Nierva joined Integrated Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics as director of laboratory services. Here, he is responsible for ensuring that the laboratory meets compliance standards and succeeds in expansion initiatives. Under Mr. Nierva's leadership, the company has grown to emphasize cellular and molecular testing, and his contributions remain crucial to its success.

Outside of his work at Integrated Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics, Mr. Nierva operates FR Almer Ventures to build laboratories for anatomic and surgical pathology work. If there is a physician, gastroenterologist, or urologist group aiming to build a laboratory, Mr. Nierva works to help these professionals develop the operation and ensure compliance with state and federal standards. Since 2016, he has contributed to the construction of five such laboratories.

Dedicated to Helping Others Succeed

Despite the scope of his career, Mr. Nierva considers himself to be an ordinary man. He doesn't feel that he goes above and beyond in his field, but simply tries to help others when he can. If there is a problem with a lab, he always proves willing to help resolve the issue and create a better system moving forward. For this reason, he is well respected among friends and peers.

Within the next few years, Mr. Nierva's goal is to pass on as much of his knowledge of laboratory medicine as possible. As he trains the next group of professionals who will fill his role, he continues to contribute to the development of regional laboratories. However, he has shared that his most recent project, a urology laboratory, may be the last such initiative he undertakes.
