Marquis Who's Who Honors Rob B. Moir for Excellence in Environmental Conservation

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / September 30, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Rob B. Moir, PhD, for his excellence in environmental stewardship and conservation. With more than five decades of experience, he has built a career defined by leadership, collaboration and a dedication to protecting marine ecosystems and coastal communities.

About Rob B. Moir

Dr. Moir is the president and executive director of the Ocean River Institute, a nonprofit environmental organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Since 2007, he has coordinated with local groups, educators and policymakers to address pressing environmental challenges. Currently, he is spearheading a project in Attleboro, Massachusetts, to plant a pocket forest designed by botanist Akira Miyawaki. The initiative will feature 35 species of native trees and shrubs that interconnect through fungal networks, creating a single, thriving ecosystem. This model enables forests to grow faster with deeper soils; four inches of soil holds seven inches of rainwater.

By reducing stormwater runoff, lessening pollution and the transport of heat, the ocean ecosystem that whales depend on is improved.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Moir worked as a science teacher, teaching elementary school science at a private school and seventh-grade science in a public school. He has served as an assistant scientist at the Sea Education Association (Woods Hole), an education curator at the New England Aquarium, and a curator of Natural History at the Peabody Essex Museum. He was a founding member of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Service Partnership, dedicated over two decades as a trustee of the Cambridge School of Weston, and has lectured at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. His career has consistently combined education and advocacy to achieve long-term solutions.

Dr. Moir's education prepared him for his life's work. He earned a bachelor's degree in natural sciences from Hampshire College in 1977 and a master's degree in science teaching and environmental management from Antioch University New England in 1979. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental studies at Antioch in 2002, a certification in ecology from the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, and a fellowship at USC Wrigley Institute for Environment and Sustainability.

Dr. Moir's work has earned him numerous honors, including the Rockefeller Brothers Fund Award, the James Centorino Award for Distinguished Performance in Marine Education, and a Switzer Environmental Fellowship. Marquis Who's Who has also recognized him with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as distinctions as a Top Professional, Humanitarian Award recipient, and Industry Leader.

A Love for Wilderness

Outside of his professional achievements, Dr. Moir enjoys his Rhodes 27, Gannet, sailing in Boston Harbor and beyond. His love for the outdoors, wilderness, has fueled a lifelong commitment, which began with his participation in the first Earth Day as an ecology student in high school.

Looking ahead, Dr. Moir is improving public stewardship with place-based science. We have upset the balance by removing vegetation and soil. Without changes in annual rainfall and with less water able to seep into the land, destructive stormwaters are increasing, carrying more pollutants and heat into water bodies. Warmer waters heat the air, allowing it to hold more moisture. Less water and less life in the land leads to more energy in the atmosphere. Together, communities are rising to meet these growing challenges with knowledge and compassion for all.
