UNC Greensboro Launches Plastic-Free Takeout with USEFULL

GREENSBORO, NC AND BOSTON, MA, MA / ACCESS Newswire / October 21, 2025 / UNC Greensboro (UNCG) launched a new plastic-free takeout program this fall, partnering with USEFULL, a reuse platform offering stainless steel containers designed for campus dining. The initiative supports the commitment of UNCG and Spartan Dining by Chartwells to becoming a zero-waste campus by 2050, reducing landfill contributions and eliminating harmful, single-use plastics from its waste stream.

This launch marks the second University of North Carolina System school to partner with USEFULL, following a successful debut at UNC Wilmington (UNCW) in spring 2025. At UNCW, USEFULL replaced a plastic container system that suffered a 96% loss rate.

Previously, UNCG had a plastic container reuse program for residential dining, but the program also suffered from a high container loss rate, making it financially and operationally unsustainable. Containers were not returned, replacements were frequently ordered, and the program could not deliver the intended results.

"Transitioning away from plastic toward plastic-free reusables is a major step forward for UNCG," said Aimee Langford, Chartwells resident district manager at UNCG Dining Services. "With USEFULL's enhanced Transact and CBORD integrations, operational ease will only continue to improve, making this partnership especially valuable for our Transact-enabled campus."

How it Works

Students can check out USEFULL containers at participating residential dining locations using their Transact Campus ID cards or mobile credentials. The containers must be returned within a set timeframe to avoid a late fee, just like a library system.

USEFULL's technology-enabled platform provides comprehensive tracking and reporting capabilities, allowing Spartan Dining to monitor its impact through detailed metrics on waste reduction, water conservation, and emissions prevention, at both institutional and individual user levels.

This fall, the program launched at Fountain View Dining Hall. Participation is free for students, with minor fees applied only for late or unreturned containers.

Why USEFULL

  • Durable stainless steel containers with silicone lids keep food hot or cold for up to five hours

  • Fully plastic-free and dishwasher-safe

  • Zero-waste alternative to single-use containers and short-lived plastic reusables

  • Seamless integration with Transact Campus

  • Provides impact metrics on water, waste, and emissions savings

"USEFULL is designed to help universities reduce their dependence on plastic and build future-ready, sustainable dining programs," said Alison Cove, founder and CEO of USEFULL. "We're proud to partner with UNCG as they take bold steps to reduce waste and support student wellbeing."
