Lucky Shrimp AG Launches Sustainable Shrimp Farming Facility in Switzerland, Offering an Alternative to Mangrove-Destructive Imports

WINTERTHUR, CH / ACCESS Newswire / May 27, 2025 / Lucky Shrimp AG, a Switzerland-based aquaculture company, today announced the launch of its sustainable, closed-loop shrimp farming facility in Winterthur. The company aims to disrupt the global shrimp industry by offering a locally produced, antibiotic-free alternative to imported shrimp that is often associated with environmental degradation and long-distance transport emissions.

Founded by environmental engineers Alexander Dubsky and Andreas Zaugg, Lucky Shrimp AG has developed a modular aquaculture system designed to operate without antibiotics, minimize water waste, and produce fresh shrimp in landlocked Switzerland-while preserving fragile ecosystems such as mangrove forests.

"We knew from the start: If we want to farm shrimp sustainably in Europe, we need to move away from the global supply chains that destroy mangroves and ship frozen products halfway around the planet," said Alexander Dubsky, co-founder of Lucky Shrimp AG. "Our system is designed to produce fresh, traceable shrimp locally-with zero antibiotics and a fraction of the carbon footprint."

The facility includes 13 recirculating water tanks with a total capacity of 550 cubic meters, constructed within a sustainably built structure made from Swiss wood. The operation mimics natural aquatic ecosystems while eliminating the need for harmful chemicals, enabling consistent production year-round.

"Our goal was not to copy existing shrimp farms but to reinvent them from scratch," said co-founder Andreas Zaugg. "We bring together Swiss engineering and ecological thinking to produce food that is responsible, clean, and fit for the future."

Conventional shrimp farming has contributed to the destruction of over 238,000 hectares of mangrove forests globally, ecosystems that play a critical role in carbon sequestration and coastal protection. By producing shrimp inland and near consumption centers, Lucky Shrimp eliminates the environmental costs of international seafood logistics while preserving these important carbon sinks.

The company plans to expand its modular farm concept to other sites across Europe, including underutilized industrial spaces and agricultural facilities. It is also preparing to launch Europe's first shrimp larvae breeding center, supporting regional food security and reducing dependency on overseas hatcheries.
