Javier Burillo Azcarraga, founder of Las Ventanas al Paraíso and chairman of Grant's Crusade, calls for simplicity and consistency in both hospitality and support systems for neurodiverse families.

Most systems fail because they try to do too much. Javier Burillo Azcarraga built his career on a different principle: simplicity wins.

"Most systems are too complicated," Burillo says. "People think complexity makes things better. It usually makes them worse."

Burillo started at the Ritz in Acapulco washing dishes. He worked his way to General Manager over eight years, learning every part of the operation from the ground up. That discipline carried through when he founded Las Ventanas al Paraíso in 1997, a luxury resort he built from scratch and owned fully. The property was named the number one boutique hotel in the world by Condé Nast Traveler for three consecutive years.

Execution Over Theory

The same approach that worked in hospitality now shapes his work with Grant's Crusade, a nonprofit supporting neurodiverse children and their families. Burillo founded the organization in honor of his son Grant.

"In hospitality, the difference was always in execution," Burillo explains. "That same approach applies here."

Approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States has been identified with autism, according to the CDC. In Canada, estimates suggest that 1 in 50 children and youth are on the autism spectrum. The lifetime cost of supporting an individual with autism can exceed $2 million, depending on the level of care required.

Burillo believes the gap is not in awareness. It is in follow-through.

"Families don't need more words," he says. "They need real support. If the work helps, it is successful. If it doesn't, we adjust."

Build Trust Through Consistency

Burillo points to consistency as the real foundation of trust. Whether running a resort or supporting families navigating neurodiversity, the principle stays the same.

"Trust is built over time through consistency," Burillo says. "It is not complicated, but it requires discipline."

He describes his grandfather, Emilio Azcárraga, as his hero. Emilio emigrated from the Basque region of Spain with very little money and built the media empires Televisa in Mexico and Univision in the United States. Despite that success, he remained humble and generous.

"My grandfather always remained a simple, wonderful human being," Burillo recalls. "All for the people was his slogan. He was and still is my hero."

Burillo chose a different path from his family's media legacy.

"I wanted all my life to be independent," he says. "I never worked in TV or radio with my family."

Do What You Say

Burillo applies the same standards to Grant's Crusade that he brought to every restaurant and resort he built. He keeps teams small. He focuses on practical outcomes. He stays involved.

"You do what you say," Burillo explains. "You stay available. You don't overpromise. Support is ongoing. That is part of the commitment."

He opened several restaurants in Mexico, including Casa de Campo in Cuernavaca and Mexico City, both recognized as among the best in the country at the time. After selling Las Ventanas al Paraíso in 2004 to Ty Warner, he acquired a 30 percent stake in Camper & Nicholsons, one of the most prestigious yacht companies worldwide, which he owned for eight years before retiring from business.

What You Can Do

Burillo encourages individuals to take practical steps in their own communities. Listen to families. Ask what helps. Show up consistently. Support organizations that focus on execution, not just awareness. Avoid making promises you cannot keep.

"We didn't focus on being the best," Burillo says. "We focused on doing everything right, every day."
