Daecheongho Lake Obaekri-gil, which received the UN-HABITAT Asian Townscape Award, is a 220 km walking path that spans Daejeon and North Chungcheongbuk-do, featuring the environment of Daecheongho Lake, rivers, and hiking trails. Daecheongho Lake, Korea’s third largest lake, was created after the Daecheong Dam was completed in 1980. Obaekri-gil, in particular, is surrounded by mountains and forests around Daecheongho Lake, so the view is spectacular, and there are several routes to have fun in each segment.
It is a road with different themes people can experience and enjoy themselves, such as a date course where lovers can find romance, a contemplation course where one can be immersed in thoughts while admiring a blue lake, a hiking course where a visitor can climb a mountain, a family tour course where children can experience both farming and cultural exploration, a bike riding course, and so on. In addition, the Daecheongho Water Culture Center, Daecheongho Sculpture Park, Daecheongho Art Museum, and Daecheongho Lake Eco Park are open near Daecheongho Lake Obaekri-gil. These amenities are associated with Daecheongho-Obaekri-gil and can be used for recreation.
Daecheongho Lake Obaekri-gil was selected as one of a total of 199 tourism spots deemed safe for tourists in the country. It is an exceptional tourist location chosen by the Korea Tourism Organization through an expert advisory meeting among the tourist attractions nominated by local governments, allows to visit with confidence in a post-COVID-19 world. The fourth section of Daecheongho Lake Obaekni-gil, also known as the Hoban Romantic Road, was filmed in 2005 for the television drama Sad Love Story starring Kwon Sang-woo and Kim Hee-sun. Since then, it has been a favorite site for films including True Fiction, Seven Years of Night, and Rampant.
The benefit is that it consists of 21 courses that begin at the Daecheong Dam Water Culture Center and return to the beginning place which is to select a walking route based on the preference and level of difficulty. There are also hiking trails along the lake that provide access to distant communities, traditional culture, and historical sites. It is particularly popular with trekkers due to its proximity to the city center and excellent amenities. It is a fantastic area to take photographs regardless of the season, and it is also a pleasant place to wander and rest.
Daecheongho circulating bus is a bus that departs from Daejeon Station which allows tourists to travel more conveniently. It is available at the Daejeon Station Seogwangjang (Subway Daejeon Station Exit 4) city tour bus stop, but note that priority is given to those with reservations. Reservations for the in-house/non-contact/night/circular bus tour can be booked on the Daejeon City Tour website, and the cost (on average) is 4,000 won.
Daecheongho Lake can be viewed on Saturday morning of the internal tour, the Sensible Daejeon Course, or the round tour, the Daecheongho Course (weekends). In addition to Daecheongho Lake, there are several courses related to Daejeon’s tourism sites to see the city from various perspectives.
