The tournament welcomed 9,208 players competing for an $85,634,400 prize pool and a $10 million top prize.
During the early stages, ESPN followed Foxen’s play. His featured hand demonstrated the decision-making that has defined his high-stakes poker career.
Holding ace-jack, Foxen faced an all-in wager of more than 50 big blinds from Vinh Nguyen. The shove came after Nguyen opened the action and another player made a small three-bet.
Foxen assessed Nguyen’s earlier play and paid close attention to his table talk before making the call. Nguyen turned over jack-ten, leaving Foxen in front. The board produced no reversal, and Foxen collected a 142,500-chip pot.
The ESPN broadcast also featured Moneymaker during its Episode 3 “Bubble Cam” segment.
Moneymaker was eliminated during hand-for-hand play when Antonio Vargas held pocket aces. Stoyan Madanzhiev and Zhaken Seitbekov were eliminated at the same time, creating an unusual situation with three departing players and only two minimum-cash spots.
The remaining $30,000 was divided equally, with each player receiving $10,000. Moneymaker still became one of the players whose elimination officially ended the Main Event bubble.
The moment directly connected the game’s past and present. Moneymaker’s 2003 Main Event win and $2.5 Million payout were the catalyst for the poker boom.
