  • Don't overdo the holiday cheer: The holidays bring people together, and on many occasions alcoholic beverages may be served. If you decide to drink, make the proper arrangements to get home. Some options could include public transportation, rideshare, taxis or a designated sober driver to take the helm of your "sled."
  • Remember your belt: Tying a holiday tree to the roof may require a convoluted series of knots and riggings; however, fastening a seatbelt takes all of about three seconds. This quick action can reduce the chances of severe injury or worse in a crash.
  • Remain alert for increased foot traffic: Whether it's in the mall parking lot, a parade or another special event – more pedestrians could be out. Drivers need to remain on high alert, and should always yield at crosswalks because pedestrians have the right of way.
  • Trim away distractions: Getting distracted behind the wheel could bust your holiday budget, as distractions greatly increase the chances of crashing. With increased traffic on the roads and more activity in parking lots, drivers need to focus their full attention on driving at all times.
