Evolution of insurance offerings simplifies billing, documentation, and reimbursement to save practitioners’ time and get them paid more reliably

SimplePractice, the leading platform powering independent mental health practitioners, today announced its enhanced insurance solutions: Insurance Essentials, a comprehensive suite of billing tools now included in every SimplePractice plan, and Insurance Navigator, an optional add-on that combines smart billing tools with direct access to insurance experts. Developed with feedback from hundreds of clinicians, this evolution marks the company’s largest investment in product enhancements to billing and insurance to date, designed to make insurance as easy and frictionless as possible for the 250,000+ clinicians using SimplePractice.

These enhancements are timely. A recent survey found that cost remains consumers’ top concern when seeking mental healthcare. And, per SimplePractice’s “Annual State of Private Practice Report (2025 in Review),” almost half of independent practitioners have no formal business training, leaving insurance and billing issues, such as payment delays and audits, as major sources of stress and financial difficulty.

“Insurance complexity is one of the biggest challenges facing independent practitioners,” said Jonathan Seltzer, CEO of SimplePractice. “We built Insurance Essentials and Insurance Navigator to ease that burden, not only because it saves clinicians’ time and helps them get paid more reliably, but because simpler insurance means more people can afford care.”

Insurance Essentials brings together the core tools every practice needs. This includes a centralized Billing Hub that surfaces what needs attention and tracks claims from a single screen, customizable claim rules that automate repetitive edits, and workflows that make it easy to fix and resubmit denied claims without starting over. The suite also includes automated electronic remittance advice (ERA) setup to help practices get up and running faster, pre-submission error checks that catch common issues before claims go out, manual mental health coverage checks for greater billing confidence, and claim notes to keep important updates organized in one place. Early data shows clinicians using Insurance Essentials are spending 20% less time on billing per week.

For those seeking more hands-on guidance, Insurance Navigator combines everything in Insurance Essentials with advanced features and dedicated expertise. These customers get direct phone access to a team of Insurance Specialists who can help navigate complex payer requirements and claim issues, automated verification of mental health benefits with estimated client obligation before appointments, auto-fill capabilities that make manual payment posting faster by uploading explanations of payments (EOPs), and an AI-powered claim assistant that identifies issues in rejected or denied claims and guides clinicians through resolution.

“I honestly love all of the new insurance updates, particularly the one where I can add the EOP and it automatically posts the payment,” said Erica Tilley, Billing and Practice Manager at Assessment Therapy and Associates. “The new tools save me at least an hour or two a day.”

Looking ahead, SimplePractice will continue expanding both offerings with new functionality and a standalone credentialing service to help practitioners navigate the process of getting paneled with insurance plans more easily. Whether credentialing for the first time or adding payers, this will help clinicians expand their potential client pool, while maintaining their autonomy.
