Virtual Supervision For Diagnostic Imaging: 2026 Implementation Guide Released

ContrastConnect has released a guide for implementing virtual supervision infrastructure for diagnostic imaging, aligning with the CMS’ recent policy changes for 2026.

-- The release of the guide coincides with the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare’s (CMS) most recent move to amend federal rules on physician supervision during medical imaging procedures, which now permanently allow trained professionals to supervise contrast-enhanced and other level 2 diagnostic procedures remotely. In the guide, ContrastConnect explores remote supervision as an accredited model, highlighting its benefits for patients and imaging centers amid the radiologist shortage.

According to the American Society of Radiologic Technologists' 2023 Radiologic Sciences Staffing Survey, 70% of medical departments reported high staff turnover, contributing to significant staffing shortages with vacancy rates reaching all-time highs across imaging disciplines. These shortages disproportionately impact patient access in rural and underserved areas, where the limited availability of skilled technologists threatens the timely delivery of specialized imaging services and often forces appointment delays or cancellations.

ContrastConnect and other industry experts believe that virtual supervision can directly address these challenges due to the flexibility it affords imaging centers. Under the remote supervision model, which doesn’t require the supervising practitioner to be physically present, a single radiologist can oversee diagnostic procedures in multiple sites without needing to commute, allowing them to direct on-site medical personnel even in remote areas. By enabling facilities that typically lack on-site subspecialty radiologists, such as outpatient imaging centers and orthopedic practices, to access radiology expertise, medical practices can ensure consistent staffing coverage, reducing turnaround times and improving patient outcomes overall.

A report from the American College of Radiology (ACR) adds that remote oversight can improve productivity through more efficient allocation of staff and provide coaching opportunities for less experienced technologists. When implemented according to best practices, ContrastConnect says that imaging facilities will be able to extend hours of operation and increase their revenue without any negative impacts on patient care.

To successfully implement virtual supervision as an option, facilities will require HIPAA- and HITECH-compliant two-way audiovisual technology and must provide personnel with the appropriate training. ContrastConnect offers full-service onboarding and will supply its partners with the necessary infrastructure, along with a compatible platform designed to streamline workflows and patient documentation for physicians.
