Sonos, Named One of America's Greenest Companies by Newsweek, Advances Sustainability Goals and Announces Campaign to Create World’s First Underwater Sound Sanctuaries

Sonos (NASDAQ: SONO), recently named one of America's Greenest Companies by Newsweek and Plant-A Insights, today released its annual Listen Better Report, offering a comprehensive overview of the company's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) efforts. The report also details Sonos’ new signature sustainability campaign to create the world’s first underwater sound sanctuaries with the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a leading environmental nonprofit.

“When a customer brings a Sonos product into their home, that’s a big deal to us,” said Sonos Chief Executive Officer, Tom Conrad. “Our speakers live on your shelves, under your TVs, next to your records. They become part of your space and your rituals for many years to come. When something lives with you that long, it should be made responsibly.”

Key Sustainability Highlights

The 2025 Report highlights significant strides in responsible product design and commitment to the circular economy:

  • Recycled Materials Milestone: Sonos Arc Ultra, Sonos Era 100, Sonos Era 300, and Sonos Ace headphones have all earned certification under the rigorous third-party SCS Recycled Content Standard.
  • Progress in Plastics: Sonos is dramatically increasing the recycled plastic content in its leading soundbar, Arc Ultra, from 5% to over 40%, by July 2026.
  • Design for Longevity: Roughly nine out of ten Sonos products ever sold are still in use today, a result of the company’s efforts to reduce e-waste. This is supported by features like replaceable, magnetically attached ear cushions on Sonos Ace and the user-replaceable battery kit for Move 2. Products are increasingly designed using screws instead of adhesives for improved serviceability.
  • Award-Winning Packaging: The company's packaging team has earned first place at the prestigious Dieline Awards for the fourth time, recognized for innovative designs that provide a joyful unboxing experience, streamline shipping to customers, and cut out unnecessary materials.
  • Future Focused: Sonos is now exploring new ways to extend the life of its products and ensure they are responsibly retired.

New Social Impact campaign to create the world’s first underwater sound sanctuaries

Sonos launched a campaign with the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation to create the world’s first underwater sound sanctuaries through a $100,000 grant as part of its membership in 1% for the Planet.

  • Underwater radiated noise caused by container ships can severely disrupt marine ecosystems.
  • The ambitious campaign will roll out in three stages: (1) define standardized criteria for sound sanctuaries (2) designate sanctuaries around the world, and (3) help cultivate new sanctuaries.
  • The goal is to designate the world’s first underwater sound sanctuaries by 2027.
  • The campaign is complemented by Sonos’ successful Regenerative Sound program which supports nonprofits using acoustic sensors and AI to promote biodiversity. Sonos also serves as a brand ambassador for the Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies program, encouraging its shipping partners to slow down in the Santa Barbara Channel - near its HQ - to reduce whale strikes, lower carbon emissions, and minimize underwater noise pollution.

“For several years, we have supported nonprofits using AI and acoustic sensors to promote biodiversity in our oceans and forests through our giving from 1% for the Planet. This is the next step,” said Deji Olukotun, Sonos’ Global Director of Corporate Social Responsibility. “We envision thriving underwater marine habitats with rich, natural sound - the right kind of sound. We’re excited to partner with the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation to make this vision a reality.”

"Partnering with Sonos on this initiative allows us to draw on decades of ocean sound research and marine management experience towards the designation of the world's first underwater sound sanctuaries," said Robert Mazurek, Executive Director of the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation. "Our Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies program has proven the power of collaborative public-private partnerships to tackle some of the largest threats to marine environments and endangered whale populations. Managing underwater noise is fundamental to protecting marine habitats, and this partnership positions us to help ocean managers worldwide adopt proven noise mitigation strategies."

Climate Action and Social Responsibility

Sonos continues to execute its Climate Action Plan while advancing social equity efforts:

  • Carbon Neutral Operations: Sonos’ operations, including global offices and business travel, have been carbon neutral for eight consecutive years.
  • Emissions Update: The company's total carbon emissions are 20% lower than its 2020 baseline. Although total emissions increased modestly by 5% since FY23, the long-term systemic reductions remain on track.
  • Responsible Sourcing: Sonos upgraded its membership in the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA), deepening its commitment to fair labor practices and environmental responsibility. Last year, Sonos integrated the RBA Code of Conduct into its Supplier Code of Conduct to set stringent requirements for labor, health and safety, and environmental practices.
  • Environmental Philanthropy: Sonos continues its ongoing membership with 1% for the Planet, donating proceeds of all Certified Refurbished product sales.
