Older fireplaces can accumulate fine dust, soot, creosote, and other combustion residue. Exterior chimney brickwork may also deteriorate over time, potentially leading to extensive and costly renovation needs.
The Firebox Encapsulator is designed as a pre-built, single-body stainless-steel enclosure that fits within an existing fireplace. The enclosure encapsulates the older firebox interior and provides a clean surface for the installation of an appropriate gas log system.
The design includes two lateral side panels, a flat bottom panel, and a continuous curved panel that forms the back and top of the enclosure. Reinforcing creases extend across the curved panel to increase strength and rigidity while helping direct heat toward the fireplace opening.
Vented and non-vented configurations have been developed. The vented version includes an exhaust vent integrated through the curved upper panel, while the non-vented version retains the same enclosure geometry without the exhaust vent. Both configurations are intended to accommodate natural gas or propane gas log systems when professionally selected and installed.
Potential applications include existing residential fireplaces, home renovations, new residential construction, commercial construction, hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality environments.
Depending on the property and installation requirements, the concept may also provide an option for addressing an aging exterior chimney while retaining the existing interior fireplace. All applications require professional evaluation and compliance with applicable building, fire, ventilation, gas appliance, and safety codes.
