It has often been said that the greatest art is produced by troubled souls. Whether this is true or not, the reality is that many artists do struggle with issues like mental illness, poverty, homelessness and emotional trauma from war experiences. The Art Without a Roof (AWR) brand helps these at-risk artists by offering them the opportunity to obtain a scholarship that can be used on basic needs, tutoring, GED completion, and/or a college scholarship.
Art Without a Roof has already impacted the lives of local artists like Inocente, who was homeless for nine years. Inocente eventually entered the Monarch School, which serves homeless youth in kindergarten through high school, and blossomed into a brilliant artist. Her story was captured in an Academy Award-winning movie.
AWR is composed of students and graduates from San Diego State University who are committed to and passionate about helping many of these struggling individuals by empowering them to develop their art and find a sustainable vocation through their creative expression. Art Without a Roof collects artistic image submissions from these at-risk artists, and then asks members to choose their preference. The highest rated image is then applied to AWR shirts and apparel, which is then sold commercially. Then 15 percent of the net profit is applied to the artist’s scholarship, while another 5 percent of profit is invested in local art programs.
As one of the most admirable and innovative social enterprises in the nation, Art Without a Roof has the potential to change an enormous number of lives, but it requires financial support to become a viable operation. To raise the $25,000 needed to produce the AWR apparel, distribute and market it, the AWR team has sponsored a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
