Why Are Coinbase (COIN) Shares Soaring Today

What Happened?

Shares of blockchain infrastructure company Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) jumped 6.6% in the afternoon session after stocks tied to digital assets surged as Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency by market cap, reached a new all-time high, edging past the $110,000 mark.

This rally also reflects growing investor confidence in Bitcoin's role as a potential store of value during a period of heightened market uncertainty. Geopolitical tensions, escalating trade disputes, and ongoing concerns about U.S. debt sustainability have prompted a flight to alternative assets, with digital currencies emerging as a perceived hedge against some of these risks.

Also, rising asset prices typically improve investor confidence, prompting traders and investors to increase their participation by placing new bets or engaging in more frequent trading. This heightened trading activity translates into higher transaction volumes and more revenues for platforms like Coinbase or Robinhood that earn fees on these trades.

The shares closed the day at $271.95, up 5% from previous close.

What The Market Is Telling Us

Coinbase’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 66 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 6 days ago when the stock gained 9.3% on the news that the company clarified that the SEC's inquiry concerns a discontinued user-metric last reported more than two and a half years ago.

Coinbase's Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal, explained, "This is a hold-over investigation from the prior administration about a metric we stopped reporting two and a half years ago, which was fully disclosed to the public."

Some Wall Street analysts stayed positive despite the negative news, particularly in light of a cybersecurity breach disclosed the previous day. Oppenheimer analyst Owen Lau reaffirmed a Buy rating, saying the stock's negative reaction to the news was an opportunity for investors to accumulate more shares. Lau added "While we think the expected remediation cost of $180-$400M is high, we believe COIN intends to send a message that customers' funds are safe, and they will take full responsibility."

Coinbase is up 5.6% since the beginning of the year, but at $271.72 per share, it is still trading 20.9% below its 52-week high of $343.62 from December 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Coinbase’s shares at the IPO in April 2021 would now be looking at an investment worth $827.71.

Today’s young investors won’t have read the timeless lessons in Gorilla Game: Picking Winners In High Technology because it was written more than 20 years ago when Microsoft and Apple were first establishing their supremacy. But if we apply the same principles, then enterprise software stocks leveraging their own generative AI capabilities may well be the Gorillas of the future. So, in that spirit, we are excited to present our Special Free Report on a profitable, fast-growing enterprise software stock that is already riding the automation wave and looking to catch the generative AI next.
