On the upside
Palo Alto Networks (NYSE: PANW) reported a smaller than expected loss for the first quarter as revenue climbed.
Starboard Value acquired a 10.7% stake in Mellanox Technologies (Nasdaq: MLNX).
Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) reported better than expected earnings for the second quarter.
On the downside
Signet Jewelers (NYSE: SIG) fell to a greater than expected loss for the third quarter and lowered its forecast.
Third quarter earnings fell for Vipshop Holdings (NYSE: VIPS).
Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB) disappointed with lower first quarter earnings that fell short of expectations and warned of lower earnings for the year.
In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 3 to 1 on the NYSE and by 5 to 2 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 rose 7 points to 2,589. Bitcoin climbed $69 to $8,309.
