How Activists Are Struggling For LGBT Rights

Some people are committed to bringing attention to the issues concerning the LGBTQ+ community and elevating the work of those fighting for justice and equality. LGBTQ+ activists today are part of a long line of people who have committed their lives to changing how the world views members of their community. For years, these activists have driven social movements and have fought for gender and sexual equality. The LGBTQ rights movement would not be where it is today if it weren't for these outstanding people, but their campaign for equality has just begun! Following are some of the brave people who are making a difference in the world.

Cyndi Lauper

Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper Thornton is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and activist. Throughout her career, Lauper has been an outspoken advocate of LGBTQ+ rights, pushing for equality through numerous charities and gay pride events worldwide. She became an activist because of her sister Ellen who is a lesbian, and her own belief in inequality.

In her song, "Above the Clouds.", she even honored Matthew Shepard, a young gay man beaten to death in Wyoming. In 2007, she co-founded the True Colors tour for Human Rights in the United States and Canada. The Human Rights Campaign, which works for equal rights for LGBT people, received a dollar for each ticket that was sold at her concert.

Todd Emerson

Todd Emerson is a retired Irish-American Veteran and prominent gay rights, activist. He is known for being an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ rights. In 1993, he was the first individual to organize the 'Ocean Spring's Pride Protest March,' which was held in Mississippi to support the LGBTQ community. He has suffered death threats, abuse, and public campaigns in his many years as an LGBTQ activist but has never backed down!

He is the founder of both GL Friendly and The Mississippi Gay and Lesbian Task Force. He has also volunteered with the South Mississippi Aid Task Force.

Ose Arheghan

21-year-old activist Ose Arheghan, an IB Diploma Programme student and aspiring journalist, has been an ardent advocate for LGBTQ rights. Ose began openly identifying as queer in the eighth grade and was determined to make their school safer for LGBTQIA+ pupils. Ose began leading their school's cultural proficiency panel in high school, which was essential in the school's discriminatory policy being changed.

Ose also employs gender-neutral pronouns and wrote an entire series on diversity for The Shakerite last year.

Everyone should have equal rights and be able to live without fear of injury, coercion, or discrimination, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. These activists advocate for LGBTQ rights without any fear in countries where doing so can be dangerous and are a source of hope for many in this community. Their bravery is appreciated by many people today as they continue to make positive contributions to society.
