Symposium Calling for Maritime Cooperation Held in Sanya

-- China is willing to be a good neighbor, a good partner, and a good friend. Although frictions are inevitable between neighbors, the key is to manage differences and to resolve disputes. This commitment was emphasized by Sun Weidong, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, during the 6th Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance held by the Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance (Huayang Center) and the National Institute for South China Sea Studies (NISCSS) in Sanya on 10 December.

Sun, in his keynote speech, further shared his thoughts on global maritime cooperation by upholding the international rule of law, adhering to the people-centered approach, focusing on actions and deepening mutually beneficial maritime cooperation.

Bateer, Executive Vice Governor of Hainan Province, introduced in his speech the achievement of Hainan Free Trade Port, including the construction of marine energy industries, recent development of the submarine intelligent computer center, and marine ecological protection. The reform policies to be taken, according to Bateer, include the implementation of more favourable zero-tariff policies for goods, more flexible trade management measures, more convenient passage policies, and a more precise regulatory model.

Sun Shuxian, Vice Minister of Natural Resources and Administrator of State Oceanic Administration, proposed three initiatives for the promotion of pragmatic maritime cooperation and sustainable development of the oceans: enhance mutual trust and cooperation; work together to cope with challenges and to protect marine ecological system; and jointly build a platform for cooperation for effective usage of empowering role of technological innovation.

Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah, Secretary-General of International Organization for Mediation, introduced the function of IOMed, the first treaty-based international organization exclusively promoting the dispute settlement through mediation, located in Hong Kong, China, with an extended emphasis on the usefulness of mediation in international dispute settlement.

Liu Zhenmin, Special Envoy for Climate Change of China, delivered the speech regarding the sustainable development and global ocean governance, providing insights for the coordination of protection of maritime titles and marine ecological systems.

Ahmed Aarim Mohamed, Deputy Minister of the Fisheries and Ocean Resources of the Republic of Maldives, offered the Symposium a Maldive perspective regarding the global ocean governance and made an urgent appeal for collaborative activities of states to combat climate change.

Dr. Wu Shicun, serving concurrently as Chairman of the Huayang Center and Chairman of the Academic Committee of the NISCSS, delivered an opening remark reviewing the major challenges in the oceans to the international society and introduced the future role of the Symposium in advancing global maritime cooperation.

The Symposium has attracted over 300 participants, including experts, former political figures, diplomats, and private entities with discussions spanning global ocean governance, maritime dispute management, blue partnerships, geopolitics in the South China Sea, marine ecological conservation, and sea lanes and submarine infrastructure.
