Scientific Figure Releases Free Layout Template Libraries for Graphical Abstracts and Research Posters

Two open libraries cover six graphical abstract layout structures and standard conference poster formats, aimed at researchers who need publication-ready figures without a paid design subscription.

NEWARK, Del. - Aug. 15, 2026 - PRLog -- Scientific Figure has released two free template libraries for researchers preparing work for publication and conference presentation: a graphical abstract template library organized by layout structure, and a scientific poster template library covering standard conference formats.

The graphical abstract library is organized around a question most authors face before they open any design software: what shape does the result actually have? A linear process, a two-arm comparison, a mechanism with a feedback loop, and a set of parallel findings each read best in a different arrangement, and choosing the wrong one is a common reason a graphical abstract ends up as a collection of unrelated icons. The library covers six layout structures, each with the reading order and whitespace rules that follow from it.

The poster library addresses a more practical gap. Conference poster guidance frequently assumes access to professional design software, while most researchers build posters in PowerPoint the week before the meeting. The templates cover the dimensions conferences actually specify and are usable without design training.

Both libraries are free to browse and use. They accompany the company's figure generation tools, which produce journal-ready figures from a text description: the graphical abstract maker and the scientific poster maker.

The release comes as research groups reassess software spending. Institutional site licenses for figure-making software have been discontinued at some universities in recent budget cycles, leaving individual labs to cover the cost or find alternatives. Scientific Figure offers a free tier that requires no subscription.

"Most figure advice tells authors to keep it simple, which is not useful when you are looking at a blank canvas," said John Barrett, founder of Scientific Figure. "The decision that actually matters is structural, and it happens before anything gets drawn. We built the libraries around that decision rather than around visual style."

Alongside the templates, the company maintains software-agnostic reference guides on figure preparation, including graphical abstract requirements, Scientific Reports figure requirements, how to make a research poster, and a general guide to making scientific figures. The guides are written to be usable in Illustrator, Inkscape, matplotlib or PowerPoint, independent of the company's own tools.
