Why Tesla (TSLA) Stock Is Up Today

What Happened?

Shares of electric vehicle pioneer Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) jumped 4.9% in the afternoon session as investors continued to focus on the long-term potential of the company’s autonomous driving technology.

According to Barron's, Tesla's stock price remains closely tied to its efforts to tap into the massive self-driving market and secure regulatory approvals for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. While recent updates to the FSD system have shown improvements in smoothness and decision-making, beta testers have highlighted persistent weaknesses, particularly the system's inability to effectively detect and navigate around potholes and road debris.

However, investors appear willing to look past these near-term technical speed bumps, betting instead that the company will eventually refine its camera-only approach and successfully launch its highly anticipated robotaxi network.

Adding to the optimism, Musk said (in a weekend post on X, formerly Twitter) that SpaceX and Tesla are "each building 100 gigawatts per year of solar production capacity."

While the market often trades Tesla on automotive deliveries and autonomous driving timelines, the solar push could position the company as a direct play on the artificial intelligence infrastructure build-out.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Tesla’s shares are quite volatile and have had 16 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 12 days ago when the stock gained 3.5% on the news that permit filings revealed the company is building a dedicated wireless charging hub for its upcoming Cybercab fleet in Austin, Texas.

Tesla is down 15.9% since the beginning of the year, and at $368.38 per share, it is trading 24.8% below its 52-week high of $489.88 from December 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Tesla’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,502.

ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.

AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
