About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Marquis Who's Who Honors Richard Winter for Expertise in Data Architecture

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / September 9, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Richard Winter for expertise in data architecture. As chief executive officer and principal consultant of WinterCorp, Mr. Winter has spent more than three decades advising executives on high-stakes decisions involving large-scale data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI).

WinterCorp's Legacy Since 1992

Since establishing WinterCorp in 1992, Mr. Winter has led the Tyngsboro, Massachusetts-based firm in serving major corporations and government agencies. The company has been retained on roughly 50 occasions for complex projects. The firm provides platform evaluations and recommendations that have helped clients build or modernize large-scale data systems.

WinterCorp concentrates on assisting organizations that develop or upgrade large-scale data lakehouses. These systems are essential to businesses that use analytics and AI as key competitive tools. Building a large data lakehouse can be compared to constructing a digital skyscraper. In other words, a strong foundation and structural integrity are critical for long-term success, and because of their large scale, these systems require special skills and know-how.

Mr. Winter's projects often involve substantial investment and carry significant technical challenges. One example included work with an aerospace contractor on a $1 billion federal system. WinterCorp created and executed a testing process to determine which database platform can meet demanding requirements. Multiple vendors participated, but only one met the criteria. "We recommended that product and the system was successfully implemented," Mr. Winter says.

Specialized Focus on Large and Complex Systems

"When I was ready to start my own business, I drew on the expertise I developed," Mr. Winter says. Before founding WinterCorp, he spent 23 years with the Computer Corporation of America. The company developed database management software for over 1,000 of the largest systems worldwide. Contributions to product development and years of hands-on technical work-built expertise that later shaped the consulting approach at WinterCorp.

Mr. Winter focuses on a narrow set of organizations with specialized requirements. This niche approach distinguishes the practice from general data consulting firms. "I decided early on that I was going to focus exclusively on this area of large-scale and high-complexity systems - the skyscrapers of the world of data and analytics," he says. As a result, the company provides detailed analysis and quantitative evaluations that address questions about long-term costs, technical feasibility and system performance.

Recognized Among Top Architecture Data Firms

CEO Review Magazine, CIO Bulletin and CIO Review have placed WinterCorp among the top five data architecture firms for five consecutive years. The firm's evaluations differ from most in the industry by employing quantitative methods and realistic large scale testing to reveal scalability problems and project operational costs over several years of use. The organization also assesses a platform's ability to meet unique requirements before making significant investments.

In addition to leading WinterCorp, Mr. Winter serves as a faculty member at the Data Warehousing Institute and as research director for the Analyst + Consultant Advisory Network. Membership in the Association for Computing Machinery reflects his continued involvement with the broader technical community. He was recently elected as a Fellow by BARC, a leading industry analyst firm based in Germany.

Mr. Winter holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan College of Engineering, where he was elected to the Alpha Pi Mu honor society. As an accomplished data architect consultant, he attributes his professional success to in-depth technical expertise, a focus on quality and the ability to solve complex problems for clients with unusual and demanding needs.

Leadership in Tech and Local Causes

"For the last few years, I've been focusing on the intersection of artificial intelligence and large-scale data," Mr. Winter says. Upcoming plans include expanding WinterCorp's services to assist leading enterprises in making critical decisions about integrating artificial intelligence - including generative, agentic and causal AI -- with enterprise data to achieve target business results.

Outside of the workplace, community involvement matters to Mr. Winter. Civic engagement includes serving as the John Payne Music Center Treasurer in Brookline. This role reflects his dedication to supporting local organizations outside the data consulting sector.
