About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

LIGHT Helmets’ Apache Pro Named Top-Performing New Helmet in NFLPA/NFL’s Testing

LIGHT Helmets’ Apache Pro and Gladiator Thunder earn top marks across multiple position-specific categories

LIGHT Helmets, the maker of the lightest and most innovative protective sports headgear, today revealed that its Apache Pro helmet was the top-performing new helmet tested in 2025 for QB position-specific tested helmets, and #2 overall in that category by the NFLPA/NFL. This milestone further establishes LIGHT Helmets as a key player in NFL player safety.

The NFL and NFLPA released their annual Helmet Laboratory Testing Performance Results, which assessed the performance of dozens of other helmets, recognizing LIGHT Helmets with:

  • Apache Pro: Tested best among newly tested helmets in 2025 for QB position-specific tested helmets and #2 overall in the QB category. The Apache Pro is equipped with the next-gen 3D printed pods for maximum impact absorption and lightweight flexibility. It features 20 customizable impact zones to optimize fit and protection for players and is designed to be the lightest football helmet on the market, improving player performance without compromising protection, weighing up to 40% less than top competitor helmets.
  • Gladiator Thunder: Earned top position-specific rankings, including #2 for Offensive Lineman. Built with an advanced TPU liner engineered for multi-impact absorption and durability, the Gladiator Thunder provides pro-level protection while maintaining LIGHT’s signature ultra-lightweight performance. The Gladiator Thunder is a refined version of the Gladiator ATK, worn by Tyrod Taylor and Cam Jordan in the 2024 season. Like the Apache Pro, the Gladiator Thunder weights up to 40% less than competitive helmets reducing kinetic energy in many on field events.

Through extensive laboratory research the NFL and NFLPA evaluate which helmets best reduce the likelihood and severity of head impacts, noting players should also take fit, comfort, durability, and player position into account when choosing a helmet. The results are shared with NFL players, coaches, medical teams, equipment staff, and more to inform gear for the upcoming season

“Player safety isn’t just a priority - it’s the foundation of everything we do at LIGHT Helmets. We’re always working to improve our technology so players can stay protected both on and off the field,” shared Nick Esayian, CEO of LIGHT Helmets. “This recognition moves us closer to getting our helmets into the hands of more teams. Players get to choose what they wear, and we want LIGHT Helmets to be their top choice, choosing safety first over anything else. We’re honored by this accolade and excited to see more players suited up in our helmets for the upcoming season.”

The 2024/2025 season has been a milestone year for LIGHT Helmets, with the Apache Pro helmet receiving a #1 rating by the independent lab at Virginia Tech, and solidifying a partnership with the PFRPA to enhance player safety at all levels of football. LIGHT Helmets’ 3D printed technology and innovative designs are redefining what a football helmet can achieve in terms of protection, performance, and comfort. Their impact is evident at the highest levels of the game, with LIGHT Helmets featured in all 32 NFL locker rooms and roughly 100 NCAA programs.

The addition of Apache Pro and Gladiator Thunder on the annual Helmet Laboratory Testing Performance Results lists further establishes LIGHT Helmets as a trusted and reliable helmet for players to consider and represents the next generation of lightweight, high-performance football helmets.

The results follow other significant industry news, where in February we saw the finalization of the new NOCSAE Youth Standard, which limits youth helmets to a maximum weight of 3.5lbs - a standard that LIGHT Helmets has already been meeting for years. This move reflects a growing consensus among scientists and engineers that lighter helmets are safer, and LIGHT Helmets is leading the way.
