Stephen L. Sherwin Releases The Essential Handbook for Restorative Justice and Communication

Chicago, IL - Author and educator Stephen L. Sherwin has released A Guide to Mediation Training: An Insightful and Uncomplicated Guide to Learning Mediation, a timely and practical resource that brings clarity to the art of resolving conflicts through communication, empathy, and structure.

Drawing from decades of experience in law enforcement, education, and community work, Sherwin presents mediation not as a complicated legal tool, but as a simple, human-centered process that anyone can learn and apply. His approach is rooted in real-world practice and supported by the core principles of restorative justice, respect, accountability, and understanding.

Mediation gives people something the legal system often cannot, a voice and the chance to be heard, Sherwin explains. It helps people take ownership of their disagreements and find solutions that restore trust rather than divide.

This guide walks readers through the essential stages of mediation, from preparing the session and setting ground rules to active listening, reframing conversations, and helping parties reach agreements they can both accept. Sherwin also highlights how cultural awareness, emotional intelligence, and neutrality shape successful outcomes. Each section of the book is clear, step-by-step, and supported by examples from real mediation experiences in schools, police departments, and community centers.

Designed for a wide audience, A Guide to Mediation Training is ideal for educators, law enforcement officers, HR professionals, students, and anyone who wants to handle conflict more effectively. It is equally valuable for those seeking professional mediation training and those simply looking to build better communication skills in their daily lives.

Sherwin’s background as a Marine Corps veteran, Chicago police officer, and university professor gives the book authenticity and balance. His voice is calm, practical, and rooted in experience, making complex mediation principles both understandable and applicable.

“Conflict will always exist, but hostility doesn’t have to,” Sherwin says. “When people are given the tools to listen and communicate, resolution becomes possible.”
