About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Faith, Hope, and Grief: Inspiring Memoir by Author Tom Smith

By: Get News
"As he answered the call, he saw the time: 3:00 a.m. Nothing good comes from a three o'clock call."

Middleburg, FL, USA - April 18, 2025 - Poignant, thoughtful, and emotional, The Three O'clock Calls is Tom Smith's memoir. It delves into the lives of three central figures in his life—George, Danielle, and Blake—each facing their own battles and transformations. Interwoven within their stories is Tom himself, and The Three O'clock Calls reflects on his faith and the role these people played in his life and his relationship with God.

Tom Smith's memoir is one family's story of life's misfortune and its happiness and the best way to navigate the stormy seas. It's filled with the best kind of life lessons.

John J. Kelly, The Detroit Free Press, 5-Stars

George (Tom's father), a man haunted by his past and struggling with alcoholism, recounts his tumultuous journey from making moonshine with his father to grappling with the consequences of his actions. Danielle (Tom's daughter), a young and ambitious golfer, navigates the challenges of college life, family expectations, and personal growth. Blake (Tom's nephew), an apprentice plumber with dreams of a stable future, faces the harsh realities of life and the impact of his choices. Ultimately, their stories end in tragedy, and Tom explains how he worked through the grief through love, forgiveness, and resilience.

Especially poignant during these chaotic times, this book brings a sense of peace and understanding—a very welcome addition to our library.

Grady Harp, Amazon Top 100 Hall of Fame Reviewer, 5-stars

In describing the purpose of sharing his story, Tom says, "These stories are part of my life. They are massive parts, but they are not the whole of it. I have more life to live, more people to love and serve, more to discover about God. But the stories I have told in this book are the poignant ones that keep me believing. Isn't that strange? That the very same stories that bring me the most pain are the ones that keep me clinging to faith? I suspect this is because pain shows me my need in profound ways and because I can look back on my life and see how God has never abandoned me."

Both religious and non-religious readers will find something in this novel. His discussions of faith and grief are absolutely, beautifully devastating but cut to the heart of the matter in a way that will leave readers deeply touched.

Kathryn Picard, Librarian Book Connoisseur, 5-Stars

The Three O'clock Calls is a thought-provoking read that offers comfort and reassurance to those in any walks of life. Tom Smith has a straightforward writing style that makes the prose easy to digest. Through vivid storytelling and emotional depth, The Three O'clock Calls captures the essence of human resilience and the quest for meaning amidst life's trials.
