About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Orange Crew Launches Eco-Friendly Mattress Disposal Service for Chicago Residents

Orange Crew has launched an eco-friendly mattress disposal service in Chicago, aiming to divert 75% of materials from landfills. The service reduces illegal dumping and supports city sustainability goals through certified recycling partnerships and transparent environmental reporting.

-- Chicago, IL – June 10, 2025 – Orange Crew, a regional provider of sustainable waste removal solutions, has officially launched an eco-friendly mattress disposal service tailored to the needs of residents throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. The program is intended to offer an environmentally responsible alternative for the disposal of mattresses, a category of waste that has long posed environmental and logistical challenges.

Mattresses are among the most problematic items in the residential waste stream. An estimated 20 million are discarded in the U.S. each year, each occupying significant landfill space due to their size and non-compacting structure. In addition to spatial concerns, mattresses often contain recyclable components—such as metal springs, wood, and polyurethane foam—that are frequently lost to landfill. Orange Crew’s new service is designed to recover these materials and direct them toward certified recycling facilities in the region.

As part of this initiative, Orange Crew has developed partnerships with licensed material recovery facilities (MRFs) to dismantle and sort mattress components in compliance with industry and environmental standards. The company has set a diversion goal of at least 75% per unit collected, meaning the majority of each mattress’s material will be recycled or repurposed rather than landfilled.

“Mattresses have historically been difficult to dispose of sustainably,” said George Dim, Owner of Orange Crew. “This program not only addresses a persistent gap in junk removal service but also aligns with our mission to reduce the environmental impact of everyday disposal practices.”

The program’s launch follows the successful completion of a six-month pilot conducted in select neighborhoods across the North and West Sides of Chicago. During the pilot, over 2,000 mattresses were collected, with a diversion rate exceeding 80%. These results informed route optimization, collection practices, and recycling workflows, which are now being scaled to serve the wider metropolitan area.

In addition to reducing landfill contributions, the mattress disposal program is expected to curb instances of illegal dumping. Discarded mattresses left on curbsides or in alleys are not only unsightly but may pose public health risks and contribute to urban blight. By providing a convenient and accountable alternative, the service helps mitigate these secondary effects.

Orange Crew's collection process includes flexible scheduling and online appointment booking. Service fees reflect the costs associated with responsible processing and are designed to be competitive with standard bulk pickup services. The company is also committed to transparency in operations, providing monthly data summaries on materials collected and recycled, which will be made publicly available.

“Accountability is central to our operations,” said George Dim, Owner of Orange Crew. “Our customers deserve to know that their items are being handled in a way that benefits the community and the planet.”

Environmental organizations have taken note of the program's potential. The Midwest Resource Recovery Alliance issued a statement welcoming the initiative, highlighting its potential to serve as a model for sustainable bulk waste management.

Orange Crew’s service model draws from successful programs in cities such as San Francisco and Portland, while adapting to the specific infrastructure and regulatory landscape of Chicago. Input from community organizations, waste specialists, and city agencies was considered in designing a program that is responsive to local needs.

The rollout coincides with growing public and governmental interest in circular economy principles and sustainable urban infrastructure. Orange Crew has engaged in discussions with city officials and sustainability task forces to ensure alignment with broader waste diversion goals.
