About Cabling Installation & Maintenance:

Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals.

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on:

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

SMEs Face Major Disruption if Unprepared for 2027 Landline Switch-Off, Says Yellowcom

Telecom provider urges SMEs to act now as landline phase-out threatens business continuity across the UK.

BELFAST, Northern Ireland - May 27, 2025 - PRLog -- Yellowcom, a Belfast-headquartered telecommunications provider with offices in Glasgow and Dublin, is calling on UK businesses to act urgently ahead of the national PSTN switch-off in January 2027. With less than two years to go, research reveals that thousands of SMEs remain unprepared — putting communications, customer service, and safety systems at serious risk.

Despite clear deadlines and rising copper line failures, many businesses have yet to transition to modern VoIP solutions. A 2024 Zen Internet survey found that only 18% of small businesses have made the switch, 17% have no plan, and 9% are unaware of the deadline.

"The old network is past its sell-by date," said Andrew Laing, Managing Director at Yellowcom. "BT has already reported a 45% rise in PSTN-related faults. Waiting until 2027 is a recipe for disaster — businesses must act now."

High-Risk Sectors

The switch-off affects far more than desk phones:
  • Healthcare: Over 2.3 million people rely on PSTN-based telecare alarms. Without upgrades, emergency communications for vulnerable people could fail.
  • Retail & Hospitality: PDQ terminals, booking systems, and security alarms using analogue lines may stop working, halting payments and compromising operations.
  • Construction: Life-safety systems such as lift phones, fire panels, and CCTV backhauls are tied to PSTN. Without transition, critical safety functions could stop without warning.

Awareness Gaps Across the UK

According to Gamma/Cebr, only 44% of Northern Ireland businesses knew about the switch-off as of 2024. London led with 59% awareness. Yellowcom is prioritising support in underprepared regions to ensure a smooth transition.

The Cost of Inaction

Businesses that delay risk:
  • Total loss of landline services
  • Downtime costing up to £2,400/day
  • Emergency upgrade costs up to 3x higher
  • Installation delays as demand spikes

Ofcom has confirmed PSTN reliability is already declining.

Yellowcom's 5-Step Action Plan
  1. Audit all PSTN-reliant systems
  2. Consult experts on cloud or on-premise PBX systems
  3. Start early — aim for 2025, not 2027
  4. Train staff and prepare for outages
  5. Upgrade smart — benefit from flexible working, improved features, and cost savings of up to 40% with business VoIP

"This isn't just a deadline — it's a chance to modernise," said Laing. "We've helped over 3,000 businesses future-proof their communications."
