What is Phenolic Resin – Specifications and Industry Applications

Phenolic resin is a synthetic polymer material formed by the condensation of phenols (such as phenol) and aldehydes (such as formaldehyde) under acid or base catalysis. It has excellent heat resistance, insulation and mechanical strength and is used in electrical, automotive, aerospace and other fields.

Phenolic resin (Phenolic Resin) is a synthetic resin that has been industrialized. It is made by the condensation reaction of phenol or its derivatives (such as cresol, xylenol) and formaldehyde. According to the type of catalyst (acidic or alkaline) and the ratio of raw materials, it can be divided into two categories: thermoplastic and thermosetting. ‌‌

‌Main characteristics‌ Physical properties‌:

1. It is usually a colorless or yellowish brown transparent solid. Commercially available products often add colorants to present a variety of colors. ‌‌

2. It has outstanding heat resistance and can be used for a long time at 180℃. It forms a high residual carbon rate (about 50%) at high temperature. ‌‌‌

3. Functional characteristics‌: Excellent electrical insulation, flame retardancy (no need to add flame retardants) and dimensional stability. ‌‌It has high mechanical strength, but is brittle and easy to absorb moisture. ‌‌

4. Classification and structure ‌‌ Thermoplastic phenolic resin ‌: Linear structure, requires the addition of curing agent (such as hexamethylenetetramine) to crosslink and cure. ‌‌

5. Thermosetting Phenol-formaldehyde resin ‌: Network crosslinking structure, can be cured by heating, has higher heat resistance and mechanical strength ‌‌Phenolic resin is mainly used to manufacture various plastics, coatings, adhesives and synthetic fibers.
