Sasol Chemicals Launches NACOL 18-98: A Palm-Free, Biobased Ingredient for the Personal Care Industry

New rapeseed oil-based alternative reduces environmental impact, supports compliance with EU deforestation regulations and delivers superior sustainability performance

Sasol Chemicals announced today the availability of NACOL 18-98, a palm-free, biobased stearyl alcohol solution for the personal care industry. This new formulation addresses growing concerns about deforestation and the environmental impact of palm-derived products while providing the same high-quality performance as traditional stearyl alcohols.

Exclusively based on segregated rapeseed oil, NACOL 18-98 is a renewable resource grown locally in Europe, ensuring a significantly lower product carbon footprint compared to palm-based alternatives. This new formulation is a drop-in replacement and can seamlessly integrate into existing formulations, ensuring the same performance.

NACOL 18-98 is European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) compliant. The EUDR requires companies importing palm oil and derivatives into the EU to prove, through detailed traceability, that their products are not sourced from deforested land.

“This latest formulation embodies Sasol’s commitment to providing sustainable solutions to our customers,” said Louis Snyders, Vice President Care Chemicals. “Responding to the EU’s Deforestation Regulation, we developed this as a readily available alternative to palm oil derivatives.”

With 100 percent natural content, this product empowers formulators to meet the demands of environmentally conscious consumers and comply with evolving regulations. Additionally, the product has tremendous versatility and can function as a conditioning agent, stabilizer, consistency regulator, structuring agent and opacifier in conditioners and moisturizers for personal care.

“At Sasol, we offer a broad range of alcohols, and as we continue to evolve our product portfolio, we continue to seek natural and bio-based ingredients as alternatives to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals,” added Snyders.
