Cencora Supports Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Education with Two New Programs for Health System Pharmacy Residents

Initiatives will give pharmacy residents from health systems across the US the opportunity to expand their understanding of the pharmaceutical supply chain

Cencora (formerly AmerisourceBergen), a global healthcare company, announced its two latest pharmacy education initiatives that are designed to equip health system pharmacy residents with knowledge of the pharmacy supply chain and wholesale distribution, as well as its connectivity to patient care services. Cencora launched the first of these initiatives, a 12-month Pharmacy Supply Chain Residency Forum, on July 1. The organization will also launch its Combined PGY1/PGY2 Corporate Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (CPAL) with Masters Residency Programs in the summer of 2025.

Cencora’s Pharmacy Supply Chain Residency Forum provides 16 pharmacy residents at participating health systems across the US a mix of three virtual and two in-person programs. The programs will provide residents with the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the pharmacy supply chain and wholesale distribution as integral components of patient care services. Each pharmacy resident in the cohort was carefully selected and nominated by their respective health system.

Next summer, Cencora, along with four health system partners, will offer 2-year Combined PGY1 and PGY2 CPAL with Masters Residency Programs with a focus on pharmacy supply chain management. These programs offer residents a combination of on-site and remote work. The residents will receive comprehensive training at one of the four partnered health systems’ sites alongside exposure to supply chain principles during the PGY1 year and remote corporate experiences during the PGY2 year. This combined approach is designed to poise them for success as future leaders in corporate pharmacy, providing specialized knowledge in pharmacy supply chain management. Cencora has taken the first step in the Residency Accreditation process by applying for Pre-Candidate status with the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). Cencora is proud to partner with the following health systems in offering these unique 2-year training programs:

  • Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
  • Geisinger Health System
  • Henry Ford Health
  • UC Davis Health

“Cencora is proud to present the Pharmacy Supply Chain Residency Forum and Corporate Pharmacy Administration and Leadership with Masters Residency Programs as part of our ongoing commitment to investing in pharmacy education – and on a larger scale – the future of the pharmacy supply chain,” said Matt Glucksmann, SVP & President, Health System and Government Services, Cencora. “By exposing and training residents on the critical role of wholesalers and other key stakeholders in patient care, we strive to develop the next generation of pharmacy supply chain leaders and equip top talent to meet evolving market needs. It is our hope that program participants will develop a new and exciting understanding of how their expertise can be leveraged in a healthcare institution or within the pharmacy supply chain industry.”

These two programs introduce participating residents to the pharmacy supply chain as a viable career path by exploring key supply chain concepts that directly impact pharmacy practice, such as pharmacy supply chain principles, the stakeholder ecosystem, wholesaler distribution and economics, health system leadership, drug shortage strategies, inventory management, 340B contracting and medication cost management strategies.
