Iteris Partners with National Renewable Energy Lab for Department of Energy-Funded Initiative

Iteris will be at the forefront of efforts to integrate energy metrics into standard traffic signal performance measures, bringing industry focus to sustainability

Iteris, Inc., the world’s trusted technology ecosystem for smart mobility infrastructure management, today announced that it is partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on a project focused on energy metrics in traffic signal performance measures.

The project, which is funded through the DOE’s Technology Commercialization Fund, aims to identify and grow energy and emissions metrics within the traffic signal operations community. It will embed the term “excessive energy” into standard Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPMs), strengthening the tie between infrastructure operations such as signal timing, and automobile energy expenditures such as gasoline, diesel, and battery electric, along with their associated emissions.

Traffic signals contribute to about 19% of all congestion, with optimization offering significant improvements. When these improvements are made, the traveling public is not only able to move quicker and more efficiently, but also more sustainably, saving the traveling public money and improving air quality though reduced pollution.

Iteris is the only provider combining infrastructure based ATSPM and connected vehicle based ATSPM. The combination provides a rich, nationwide data set as well as ground truth validation. By collaborating with the NREL, Iteris will integrate NREL’s leading energy and environmental measurements into traffic signal metrics (ATSPM-E) to improve transportation sustainability through energy optimized signal timing.

“We’re honored to work with NREL and DOE on this important sustainability initiative,” said Masoud Hamedi, director of data science and analytics at Iteris. “With traffic signal performance measures and optimization being one of our strongest areas of expertise and environmental stewardship being a focus of ours, it makes perfect sense to be at the forefront of integrating energy metrics in this novel approach.”
