Backblaze Advances Key Enterprise Security Features in Latest Platform Update

New AI-powered Anomaly Alerts, enterprise web console, and role-based access controls underscore commitment to data security and simplified management.

Backblaze, Inc. (Nasdaq: BLZE), the cloud storage innovator providing a modern alternative to traditional cloud providers, today announced a suite of powerful new security features to help customers prevent, detect, and mitigate security risks related to their data.

These product enhancements add to Backblaze’s existing robust foundational security capabilities, including SOC 2 certified architecture and physical security, server-side encryption for data at rest, cross-origin resource sharing (CORS) support, and key platform features like Object Lock for immutable ransomware protection, fine-grained access management controls, Cloud Replication for data redundancy, and 3x free egress to support efficient disaster recovery and testing.

"In today's evolving threat landscape, robust data security is paramount for businesses," said Gleb Budman, CEO at Backblaze. "This comprehensive update, which includes features like Anomaly Alerts, Bucket Access Logs, and the new enterprise web console, underscores our commitment to providing our customers with advanced tools to safeguard their critical information."

Highlights of Backblaze's recent security enhancements:

  • Introducing Anomaly Alerts (now in private preview): This AI-powered feature is engineered to identify suspicious patterns of data activity in Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage buckets, alerting administrators to unusual activity that could indicate data exfiltration and/or unauthorized access. If you're interested in joining the private preview, reach out to the Sales Team at sales@backblaze.com.
  • New enterprise web console and role-based access controls (now in private preview): Our new enterprise web console is designed to provide enhanced management capabilities for larger organizations. Coupled with role-based access controls (RBAC), this console streamlines the scalable and secure management of cloud storage, providing the tools organizations need to align with zero-trust principles. These enhancements help enterprises improve administrative efficiency and security posture.
  • Granular visibility with Bucket Access Logs: Now generally available, Bucket Access Logs provide customers with detailed records of operations performed on objects within their B2 buckets, such as uploads, downloads, and deletions. The logs are fully S3 compatible and can be configured via the Backblaze B2 web UI or programmatically through our API. This feature empowers security and privacy monitoring, infrastructure and traffic control, and usage tracking, contributing to minimizing the impact of malicious behavior through better forensics.
  • Event Notifications: Event Notifications allow customers to receive real-time alerts on bucket activities, such as object creation, deletion, or modification. This capability enhances proactive security monitoring and facilitates immediate response to unauthorized or suspicious actions, crucial for early detection and compliance reporting.
  • Multi-Bucket Application Keys: Multi-Bucket Application Keys make it possible to create a single key that can be used for more than one specific bucket, but not necessarily all buckets. This enhancement provides more granular control over bucket access, contributing to a reduced attack surface.
  • Scalable Application Keys: Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage offers Scalable Application Keys, enabling the generation of up to 10,000 unique, short-lived data access keys per minute. This capability significantly enhances security by limiting the exposure window of individual keys, thus reducing the attack surface for endpoint-generated content and high-volume data operations.
  • Custom Upload Timestamps: Custom Upload Timestamps allow users to specify the exact upload time for objects. This feature is critical for maintaining data integrity, supporting precise versioning, and meeting specific compliance requirements where the original creation or upload timestamp must be preserved for legal or audit purposes.

As enterprises rise to meet the demands of modern, connected workflows, best-of-breed providers operating in the open cloud and their customers need robust security features that operate seamlessly across their tech stack. By focusing on proactive security measures, continuous platform improvement, and intuitive management, Backblaze continues to empower businesses to confidently protect their valuable data.
