Comcast Pushes AI to the Edge to Power the Nation’s Smartest Broadband Network

Comcast Kicks Off Industry’s Largest Rollout of AI-Based Amplifiers – Enhancing Reliability, Speed, Latency and Security

Introduces the Ability to Implement Agentic AI and Further Automate Network Functions

Comcast is embedding artificial intelligence (AI) deeper into its broadband infrastructure than ever before to build the smartest network in America that delivers unmatched reliability, multi-gigabit speeds, ultra-low latency and enhanced security for customers. At the heart of this transformation is the largest deployment of AI-powered network amplifiers in the industry, now rolling out across all of Comcast’s markets and scaling rapidly.

These intelligent devices bring real-time decision-making capabilities to the edge of the network – just feet from homes and businesses – enabling smarter connectivity for millions of Xfinity and Comcast Business customers. They are capable of self-monitoring, self-healing, and self-maintenance, transforming the edge of the network into a hub of actionable intelligence that is being used today to deliver a better broadband experience.

“We’ve pushed AI closer to our customers than any other provider to build the most intelligent broadband network in the country,” said Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer, Connectivity and Platforms, Comcast. “This marks a pivotal shift from centralized AI systems to distributed intelligence at the edge, enabling our network to make real-time decisions that optimize each customer’s experience – whether they’re streaming, gaming, or working from home.”

Comcast’s AI Edge

Today Comcast’s AI-systems are delivering measurable benefits that enable the company to deliver a great connectivity experience for its customers. When unexpected spikes in data traffic occur, Comcast’s Octave platform uses AI to automatically boost capacity to areas where it is needed most. Every 60 minutes, AI analyzes 10,000 data points on 30 million network devices to enhance in-home WiFi performance. During extreme weather events AI tools help to accelerate recovery efforts by detecting mass network outages faster and identifying areas where technicians can safely do the work to restore services. These are just a few of the ways AI is already at work within Comcast’s network.

The addition of next-generation amplifiers and access technologies is making these AI-based network functions even smarter and introducing exciting new agentic AI capabilities. For example, AI agents can now be trained to perform large-scale tasks like identifying fiber cuts and rerouting data traffic automatically to keep customers online while the impairment is resolved by technicians in the field. Other agents can identify cyber threats and take proactive actions to mitigate them or optimize power usage based on spikes and lulls in data consumption. Agents for these use cases, and more, are in trials today and will continue to get smarter and more impactful as time goes on.

Built on Project Genesis

Project Genesis, the company’s multi-year effort to virtualize its network and deliver multi-gig speeds to millions of homes, is the foundation for taking advantage of AI to deliver the best connectivity experience for customers. Today, Project Genesis has been rolled out to more than 50 percent of Comcast’s footprint and is expected to reach 70 percent by the end of 2025.
