“Tessellation” the Best LGBTQ Short Film Award

Yang Liu (Lizzy Liu), an accomplished and talented producer and director based in Los Angeles, originally from mainland, China, has won many awards in international film festivals for her pervious art pieces. Liu says that film is not only an entertainment that brings people visual and audio enjoyment, but also an art that can dig into deep social issues and bring a sense of realism to the big screen. She is now bringing her rich professional knowledge and years of experience in filmmaking to Hollywood, working with renowned Hollywood producers to complete her next projects.

Yang Liu is working as the Creative Executive of Hollywood’s Starlight Media, which has produced such blockbusters as “Crazy Rich h Asians” and “Midway”. Liu’s supervises indie Film, Documentary, and Animation departments. She was also in charge of the “Stars Collective” program as the Executive Officers of North America. The program is for supporting BIPOC and Female filmmakers with $50-100 Million diverse funds. In the program, she produces servals independent film projects with young and aspiring producers, directors, and filmmakers around the world.

As for the project she is currently working on, Liu said, she is working closely with Academy Award winner Donna Gigliotti and Academy Award nominee Diane Quon in the post-production and distribution process of an award-winning documentary Wuhan Wuhan, which recently achieved deals with distributors PBS POV and Gravitas in North America Territory. She also worked with Venice Winner Soudade Kaadan for and indie feature film Nezouh Funded by BFI and Film 4. The project recently was selected for 2022 Venice Film Festival, Orizzionti Extra and VFL London Film Fest.

Graduated from Emerson College in US with a masters’ degree in Film Production and From the Beijing Film Academy in China, Yang Liu has a solid background in art and film studies. During her studies, she directed serval films to great success.

Among them, Yang Liu’s Film “A Matter of Time”, which she directed, produced, wrote, and edited, is one of her best works. This short film tells the story of Ying, an empty nester with mild Alzheimer’s disease, who faces her fear pf death in the face of her daughter’s insistence that she move into a local public nursing home.

The film was so successful that it won the Remi Grand Prize, Gold Award and Special Jury Prize at the 54th Worldfest-Houston international film & Video Festival. It is one of the oldest independent film festivals in the world and s tone of the top three juried film festivals in North America, along with the San Francisco Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Many famous directors have received awards from the festival in their early years of dame. The film has also been selected for screening at the 25th Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, the 44th Drama International Short Film Festival, the 27th Victoria Film Festival. In Canada, and the 17th Hollyshorts Film Festival.

As an independent filmmaker, Yang Liu’s vision is to explore the deeper issues of society and to bring the reality into the film. She believes that such in-depth films are more appealing and that it is a filmmaker’s responsibility to express reality.

Yang Liu’s also interested in drama, crime, and suspense films. She is the director, writer, producer, and editor of “She is Dangerous”, a film about a boy who specializes in perfume and decides to make a “special” gift for his beloved neighbor girl. The film won the Hollywood Gold Medal for Best Suspense Film and was nominated for an Honorable Mention at the New York Film Awards.

Yang Liu’s other works include “World Without End”, “Tessellation” and “Nude Loan”, all of which have received good results. Among them, “Tessellation” won the Best Short Film Award at the U.S. Independent Short Film Festival, the Best LGBTQ Short Film Award at the Prague International Film Festival, and the Best LGBTQ Short Film Award at the Florence Film Festival in Italy.
