Pride gear is becoming more than just a niche fashion item in today’s U.S. economy. According to an LGBT economy report by the NGLCC, LGBT-owned enterprises are estimated to inject a substantial $1.7 trillion into the U.S. economy, generating thousands of employment opportunities annually. As with any lucrative market, fashion retailers are swiftly capitalizing on the demand by offering pride outfits from men’s leather outfits to gender-fluid rainbow makeup, especially during Pride’s height in June. 

However, Target's attempt to tap into this market last year caused an uproar due to the controversial nature of their gay pride outfits like tuck-friendly swimwear. Faced with conservative backlash, they pulled their pride collection from their shelves, which only intensified criticism from the LGBT+ community. 

The results were significant, affecting not only their reputation, but also their business. According to the New York Post, unfortunately, Target's revenue took a hit, falling 4.9% from a year earlier.

While some might say "go woke, go broke," American businessman Mark Cuban told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he sees it differently. He stressed that there can be long-term benefits if corporations display true support. In other words, the failure wasn't in promoting pride outfits but rather their institutional betrayal. 

Now, as fashion retailers navigate the complexities of social activism, it's essential to learn from these missteps and demonstrate authentic, proactive support for the LGBT+ community. Fashion Marketing Should Not Rely on Rainbow Washing

Now that Pride month is widely celebrated, fashion brands are no longer fearful of waving rainbows without actually doing anything.

It also matters for customers to see long-term commitments from fashion brands on LGTBQ+ issues like recruiting a diverse and inclusive staff.

Have you ever seen an ad that subtly attracts LGBTQ+ consumers without fully embracing inclusivity? Queerbaiting often involves teasing or implying queer themes or characters from TV commercials to movies. It’s a strategy that hints at LGBTQ+ representation or relationships for marketing purposes without actually delivering on those promises. 

Moving forward, fashion companies can prioritize genuine representation and inclusivity in their marketing materials by accurately portraying LGBTQ+ individuals and relationships. Also, it helps if fashion retailers can create an authentic and respectful theme that shows they’re not in it just for brand image.

Clothing companies can also proactively engage with LGBTQ+ creators, influencers, and organizations. Over time, this should certainly build more trust with LGBTQ+ consumers.

Show Consistency Inside the Workplace

Wouldn’t you want a safe space where you feel heard, valued and respected? External marketing tactics are just one side of the coin. It’s also crucial for fashion brands to foster a supportive work culture, even by paying attention to the smallest of details. It only requires a few company policy changes, like implementing inclusive language, gender-neutral restrooms, and inclusive dress codes.

When it comes to shopping for pride clothing and accessories, there are various avenues to explore. Searching for pride outfit ideas online? You can support queer-owned businesses and LGBTQ designers by ordering from different ecommerce marketplaces. Such pride stores often feature a wide range of pride merchandise, including pride parade outfits, gay pride clothing, and pride clothes designed by members of the LGBTQ community. 

If online shopping isn't your preference, you can also visit local brick-and-mortar stores that specialize in pride wear. Additionally, consider shopping at civil rights organizations that offer pride merchandise, as proceeds often go towards supporting important causes.
