Dr. Norman D. Holcomb Unveils Groundbreaking Historical Analysis in "Who Killed Jesus?: The Authority of the Sanhedrin at the Trial of Jesus"

Acclaimed scholar and historian Dr. Norman D. Holcomb presents a compelling and meticulously researched work, Who Killed Jesus?: The Authority of the Sanhedrin at the Trial of Jesus, a book that challenges long-standing assumptions and offers a fresh perspective on one of history’s most significant events. Dr. Holcomb, a United Methodist minister, U.S. Navy Chaplain, and decorated Vietnam War veteran, leverages his extensive academic background to provide a nuanced exploration of the trial and execution of Jesus Christ.

Born in Berwind, McDowell County, West Virginia, on July 14, 1944, Dr. Holcomb has an impressive academic resume that includes doctorates from Vanderbilt University and the Institute of Liberal Arts, along with master’s degrees from Duke University, Eastern Connecticut State University, Saint Luke School of Theology, Salve Regina University, California State University, and Troy State University. His undergraduate degree in education is from Bluefield State College. Dr. Holcomb’s academic pursuits are complemented by his distinguished service, having retired as a Navy Captain after thirty-three years and from the United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Mary Beth Austin, have been married for fifty-seven years and reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

In Who Killed Jesus?: The Authority of the Sanhedrin at the Trial of Jesus, Dr. Holcomb meticulously examines the legal and historical context of capital punishment in ancient Judea. He challenges the widely held belief that the Romans were solely responsible for the death of Jesus, arguing instead that the Sanhedrin court had the power to impose and execute capital punishment. This groundbreaking claim is supported by thorough research and detailed analysis, offering readers a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding the trial of Jesus.

One of the most compelling aspects of the book is Dr. Holcomb’s exploration of Martin Luther’s role in shaping anti-Semitic sentiments. He argues that Luther’s failure to explain the historical context of a single verse of scripture from the trial led to the unjust condemnation of Jews as “Christ killers,” a sentiment that was later exploited by the National Socialist Party in 20th century Germany. Dr. Holcomb contends that Luther’s influence on German religious and political life facilitated Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and the implementation of the Holocaust.

Who Killed Jesus? is a must-read for scholars, theologians, historians, and anyone interested in understanding the profound impact of the trial of Jesus on religious, political, and social dynamics throughout history. Dr. Holcomb’s meticulous research and insightful analysis provide a fresh perspective on this pivotal event, highlighting its historical consequences and modern reflections.
