Envisioning a Drug-Free Zone: StandUP AJ Empowers the Apache Junction Community with Drug Prevention Education

StandUP AJ combats substance misuse in Apache Junction with Drug Prevention Education, building a drug-free future through youth programs and community partnerships.

Like all states across the U.S., Arizona is struggling to cope with increasing levels of drug misuse and addiction. Recent studies show that the state is seeing a spike in overdoses and deaths related to fentanyl. Fueled by a concern for the well-being of youth in their community, one organization is making strides toward fostering a drug-free environment where families can thrive.

The Anti-Drug Coalition for AJ youth stands for healthy life choices, choosing to be drug-free, and building bright futures. Founded in July 2020, StandUP AJ has united community members and organizations in Apache Junction with a shared mission of preventing substance misuse through education, outreach, and collaboration. The vision of a drug-free zone is more than a slogan to the people of Apache Junction; it is a community-wide call to action.

As a community-driven movement, StandUP AJ works closely with stakeholders to help assess the risks and strengths within the community, helping to realize the common goal of youth substance prevention. Volunteers and advocates work tirelessly to promote alternatives to substance use, such as mentorship programs, recreational activities, and mental health support.

At the heart of StandUP AJ’s mission is a comprehensive drug prevention education program that equips residents with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed, healthy choices. By empowering parents with online toolkits and focusing on early intervention and community-driven strategies, the organization aims to reduce substance misuse and its far-reaching impacts among youth and teens in its community.

StandUP AJ offers engaging, age-appropriate classes for youth and teens, emphasizing the lifelong benefits of staying drug-free. Through interactive workshops and evidence-based Drug Prevention Education, participants learn about the risks of substance misuse while building skills in decision-making, peer resistance, and healthy coping strategies.

“The strength of our approach lies in the collective power of the community. Real change happens when neighbors, schools, businesses, and local leaders come together,” said Shelly Verley, program director at StandUP AJ. “Prevention starts with empowerment. When people feel connected and supported, they’re less likely to turn to harmful substances.”

StandUP AJ is well-supported by Empowerment Systems Inc., Arizona Counter Drug Task Force and other coalitions like Southeast Valley Community Alliance, Tempe Coalition, Casa Grande Alliance, Copper Corridor, and Mesa Prevention Alliance, amplifying its Drug Prevention Education initiatives to ensure messages reach audiences of all ages. Outreach and awareness are achieved through workshops, town halls, and youth engagement programs.

StandUP AJ participates in various events and activities throughout Apache Junction to promote community engagement and a sense of belonging. The program’s success lies in its relatable approach, connecting with youth where they are and equipping them with tools to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

As part of its mission to uplift Apache Junction, StandUP AJ continues its Community Spotlight. It is an ongoing initiative that celebrates individuals and organizations making a meaningful impact through positivity and healthy decision-making. From inspiring role models to community programs that promote well-being, this campaign recognizes those who help others embrace a hopeful, substance-free life. Community members are encouraged to nominate local changemakers who are leading by example. If you are an Apache Junction resident, submit a nomination and help highlight the everyday heroes making the City a stronger, better place.

Training for youth and parenting workshops form a core part of StandUp AJ’s activities, highlighting the downsides of drug misuse, signs to look out for in drug addiction, and ways to help protect loved ones. One session reviews the fatality cases of youths who overdosed and teaches them how to react if an overdose is suspected.

The right parental support is crucial for the long-term success of drug prevention education, and StandUP AJ provides a free six-session program to support them. A workshop for parents and teenagers, “Families in Action,” is designed to improve communication, promote cooperation, and address any challenges head-on.

The organization is proud to announce that they are in the process of forming a dynamic new youth coalition, Teens with a Voice, focused on empowering young people to lead the change in preventing substance misuse within their schools and communities. By equipping teens with information, guidance, and a platform to share their voices, the coalition fosters meaningful youth involvement in creating and spreading solutions through their own experiences.

As StandUP AJ continues to grow, it stands as a model of community resilience, combining education with a collaborative spirit to pave the way for a brighter, drug-free future in Apache Junction.
