Author Patrick Fleming Brings Eco-Friendly Superhero Nature and Science Tale Filled With Humor, Kindness and Creativity in The Boy Who Could Smell Warming

By: Get News
A new illustrated environmental book for children offers a STEM-inspired story of superpowers, self-discovery, and climate awareness.

Author Patrick Fleming’s latest work, The Boy Who Could Smell Warming, introduces young readers to Reuben Otis O’Brien, a ten-year-old whose unusual sense of smell reveals something no one else can detect. This eco-friendly superhero journey combines humor, kindness, and creativity with important themes about environmental awareness, self-worth, and the power of using one’s unique gifts for good.

The story follows Reuben, a self-described “nerd in a cool guy’s body,” who begins to notice a strange odor that sometimes makes him ill. Through his own scientific investigation, he discovers that this mysterious scent is linked to environmental changes in his hometown and beyond. With the support of his family and friends, Reuben learns his ability is a rare superpower—one that can help protect the planet.

Described as an inspiring children’s book that blends science, nature, and compassion, The Boy Who Could Smell Warming offers an engaging way for children to think about pollution, climate change, and their role in caring for the environment. The illustrated environmental book is positioned as a resource for classrooms and families, bringing together adventure, science, and gentle life lessons without a didactic tone.

Amazon readers have praised the book’s originality and heart: Pia wrote, “The Boy Who Could Smell Warming is a delightfully original story that blends science, self-discovery, and just the right hint of magic. Reuben’s journey from curiosity to purpose is one only he can make.”

Jacob commented, “This story is clever, heartfelt, and totally original. Reuben is a lovable character, and his strange gift feels both unique and innovative. It’s a great read for kids who enjoy science, adventure, and stories that make them think.”

Clarence noted, “This book is a heartwarming, imaginative, and charming story about a boy discovering his unique power to smell environmental warming. It’s an excellent resource for teaching children about the environment and the way we impact it.”

Fleming’s work fits into the growing category of STEM-inspired kids fiction and nature and science books for kids. It also touches on themes of unique gifts and self-discovery, encouraging children to embrace their differences while exploring the wider world.
