Mark Andrew Kozlowski Calls for Smarter Ocean Stewardship Through Technology and Community Action

Entrepreneur and ocean advocate urges communities to take simple, local actions to protect global marine ecosystems

Marine technology entrepreneur and conservation advocate Mark Andrew Kozlowski, founder and CEO of Blue Horizon Technologies, is calling for stronger community involvement in protecting the world’s oceans. Following his recent feature interview, Kozlowski emphasized that the future of both the economy and the environment depends on working with nature rather than against it.

“Oceans are our planet’s life support system,” Kozlowski said. “They produce over half the world’s oxygen and absorb about 30% of global carbon emissions, yet we continue to push them to the brink. The solutions are out there, but they need people, communities, and businesses to step up and take part.”

The Case for Action

According to the United Nations, 90% of global fish stocks are fully exploited or overfished, while plastic pollution is expected to outweigh fish by 2050 if current trends continue. Rising sea levels threaten nearly 40% of the world’s population who live within 100 kilometers of a coast.

“These aren’t distant statistics—they’re warnings,” Kozlowski said. “What happens in the ocean affects food supply, climate stability, and entire economies. When I say we need smarter stewardship, I mean giving people the tools to make decisions that benefit both ecosystems and livelihoods.”

Technology Meets Responsibility

Through his company, Kozlowski has been at the forefront of developing AI-powered tools for real-time ocean monitoring, offshore renewable energy, and sustainable fisheries management. But in his view, the role of technology goes beyond corporate solutions.

“Data is powerful, but it only matters if it’s used,” he explained. “Communities can track coastal changes, schools can engage students in citizen science projects, and businesses can audit their supply chains. The point is: we all have a role to play.”

Building an Ocean-Literate Society

Kozlowski is also the founder of the Kozlowski Foundation for Ocean Literacy, which funds coastal education programs and youth STEM mentorship. “Young people need to see the ocean not just as scenery, but as a living system that shapes their future,” he said.

His advocacy for “living shorelines”—natural buffers such as wetlands and mangroves—underscores the value of blending nature-based solutions with innovation. “We can’t engineer our way out of every problem. Sometimes the smartest move is to restore what nature already does best,” Kozlowski noted.

A Call to Action

Kozlowski’s message is clear: meaningful change begins at the local level. “You don’t need to be a scientist or entrepreneur to make an impact,” he said. “Reduce single-use plastics, support sustainable seafood, volunteer for coastal cleanups, or even just share knowledge with your community. Every choice adds up.”
