New Memoir Brings to Life the Resilience of a Black Child in the Jim Crow South

Author Dr. Essie P. Knuckle invites readers on an unforgettable journey of courage, imagination, and survival in her new book, My Children’s Minds Will Not Be the Devil’s Workshop.

Told through the voice of a seven-and-a-half-year-old Black girl growing up in the Jim Crow South of 1952, the book blends vivid storytelling with fictionalized conversations to paint a powerful portrait of childhood in one of the most turbulent periods of American history. Through the eyes of a child, readers witness the harsh realities of segregation while also experiencing the innocence, creativity, and determination that fueled hope in the face of oppression.

At the heart of the narrative is a family’s resolve to keep their minds sharp, their spirits unbroken, and their dreams alive. Guided by a mother who believed that “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop,” young Essie and her siblings embark on an imaginative cross-country adventure that becomes both an escape and a lesson in resilience. From maps and the Sears and Roebuck catalog to the guidance of The Negro Motorist Green-Book, their journey reveals how knowledge, imagination, and faith could shield young minds from despair.

Dr. Knuckle’s deeply personal work is more than a memoir—it is a living history that preserves the voices and experiences of a generation determined not to let systemic injustice steal their dignity. It is both a testament to childhood innocence and a record of courage that still resonates today.

My Children’s Minds Will Not Be the Devil’s Workshop is available now in print and digital formats wherever books are sold.
