Health Data Systems For Stronger Public Health Outcomes: Support Program Updated

Global Health Advocacy Incubator has expanded its technical assistance program aimed at strengthening civil registration and health data systems across 22 low- and middle-income countries.

-- The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) has broadened the scope of its Data for Health initiative to provide targeted support for civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems in 22 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

More details can be found at https://www.advocacyincubator.org/program-areas/health-systems-strengthening/data-for-health

According to GHAI, inadequate health data remains a major barrier to effective public health planning in many developing nations. Globally, one billion people live in countries without standardized health data systems. Each year, roughly half of all deaths are not recorded, and 36 million babies are born without official birth registration. In low-income nations, nearly 50% of women cannot prove their age or identity due to a lack of documentation.

The expanded assistance includes four core services offered to government agencies and civil society organizations: legal framework reviews using GHAI-developed toolkits, technical support for legal reforms, budget sustainability guidance, and funding for local advocates working to build public demand for improved data systems.

GHAI's approach focuses on policy-level solutions. The organization helps governments identify gaps in their CRVS laws and implement reforms to modernize and expand data systems. Its budget sustainability framework assists countries in securing long-term domestic funding to maintain and scale data collection infrastructure.

"Strong health data systems enable governments to collect accurate information, prioritize health challenges, develop evidence-based policies, and measure progress," said a GHAI representative. "Our technical assistance builds the legal and financial foundation countries need for sustainable data collection."

Program outcomes include improved access to legal identity documents, better delivery of services, and more reliable statistics for public health decision-making. Enhanced CRVS systems also enable governments to track disease patterns, plan budgets, and monitor health outcomes.
