Government Policy Advocacy Tools For Expanding Access To Primary Care Expanded

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator has expanded its primary care advocacy programs to support governments in advancing health systems across five key areas, securing new policy and budget commitments in multiple countries.

-- The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) has updated its primary care advocacy methods to help governments implement evidence-based health policies, mobilize sustainable domestic financing, and enact legal reforms across immunization, maternal health, epidemic preparedness, health data systems, and chronic disease management.

More details can be found at https://www.advocacyincubator.org/program-areas/health-systems-strengthening

The expansion aims to support low- and middle-income countries in strengthening health systems by working directly with local civil society organizations, government officials, and media to drive policy change and reduce reliance on external donors.

In 2023, GHAI's advocacy model delivered measurable results in several regions. In India, national authorities committed to treating 75 million patients for hypertension and diabetes by 2025, integrating GHAI-supported efforts into the country's flagship program on noncommunicable disease control. In Bangladesh, targeted advocacy led to the inclusion of hypertension medication in rural community clinic formularies, significantly improving access for patients who previously had to travel long distances for treatment.

In Tanzania, GHAI and its local partners secured government funding for maternal and reproductive health programs previously supported by international donors. The initiative also led to increased budget allocations for healthcare personnel at both national and regional levels.

GHAI's immunization advocacy focuses on securing domestic financing and reducing the number of zero-dose children. Its epidemic preparedness program engages governments in Africa to prioritize local funding for emergency readiness. Additionally, the organization's data for health initiatives provides legal assessments and budget support to improve civil registration and vital statistics systems, ensuring better use of data to inform health planning and investment.

By addressing critical gaps in primary health care delivery, GHAI's programs help countries build more resilient systems that reduce chronic disease burden, particularly in regions where 82% of premature deaths from noncommunicable diseases occur.
