Hair Restoration: Baltimore Surgeon Compares Surgical and Non-Surgical Methods

Baltimore, Maryland, United States - 07-19-2022 (PR Distribution™) -

Carrie Houssock, MD, board-certified plastic surgeon and medical director of JEV Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics, provides professional advice for patients struggling to choose between surgical and non-surgical hair restoration methods.

Baltimore, MD – According to Carrie Houssock, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Baltimore, more treatments exist to combat hair thinning than ever before. “Modern forays into hair restoration have made it easier than ever to maintain a healthy head of hair,” Dr. Houssock continues. At JEV Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics, Dr. Houssock and her team strive to remain up-to-date on the latest surgical and non-surgical techniques designed to treat hair loss. Dr. Houssock says that patients often wonder whether surgical or non-surgical hair restoration methods are more effective. In her years of professional experience, she has found that the answer depends on the particular needs and goals of each individual patient.

While patients sometimes automatically think of surgery when they consider hair restoration, Dr. Houssock urges them not to think of non-surgical procedures as subpar. “While they are not as intensive as surgical methods, there are plenty of highly effective non-surgical hair restoration techniques,” she continues, adding that these treatments can also be excellent alternatives for patients unable to undergo surgery. Such procedures offered at JEV Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics include PRP and ACell® Injection Therapy, Compounded Minoxidil Formula treatments, and more. “While they are not usually as fast-acting as surgery,” says Dr. Houssock, “non-surgical treatments typically warrant less downtime, and our patients are consistently impressed with the results.”

Dr. Houssock and her team also offer a number of surgical options for hair restoration, including hairline lowering and forehead reduction, which can surgically contour the forehead and hairline into a more aesthetically pleasing position; Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), in which individual follicular hair units are extracted from a donor site and meticulously transplanted into areas of hair loss on the scalp while avoiding the use of “hair plugs”; and other techniques for hair transplant surgery. Dr. Houssock states that these surgeries have proven effective for many patients with receding hairlines, thinning hair, or more comprehensive hair loss. With that in mind, Dr. Houssock notes that patients generally need to have sufficient hair in donor sites to be eligible for hair transplant surgery.

Furthermore, Dr. Houssock encourages patients to speak to her team if they are unsure whether to go the surgical or non-surgical hair restoration route. “My team regularly helps patients choose a method after a thorough consultation,” she states. “We can also combine surgical and non-surgical techniques for optimal effects.”
