State's Optics Sector Gains Stronger Federal Voice as Bipartisan Caucus Advances U.S. Leadership in Photonics and High-Tech Innovation

TUCSON, Ariz. - Aug. 21, 2025 - PRLog -- The Arizona Technology Council and its optics and photonics industry committee, Optics Valley, today announced Rep. Juan Ciscomani has joined the Congressional Optics & Photonics Caucus, which brings together federal lawmakers committed to advancing U.S. leadership in optics and photonics. These technologies are foundational to innovation in defense, health care, mining, communications, semiconductors, energy and space exploration.

"Arizona has long been a global hub for optics and photonics, and Congressman Ciscomani's support further strengthens our voice in Washington," said Steven G. Zylstra, president and CEO of the Council and SciTech Institute. "His engagement will help ensure federal policy reflects the importance of this sector to national security and economic competitiveness."

Ciscomani represents Arizona's 6th Congressional District, which includes a robust community of companies driving innovation in precision optics, lasers, imaging and semiconductor technologies. It is fueled by The University of Arizona Wyant College of Optical Sciences, home to world-leading optics and photonics research. By joining the caucus, Ciscomani brings Arizona's unique strengths to the national dialogue about science, technology and workforce development.

"Optics Valley is proud to see Congressman Ciscomani join this bipartisan caucus," said Katie Schwertz, chair of Optics Valley. "His participation underscores the critical role that Southern Arizona plays in advancing optical science and technology, and we look forward to working with him to advocate the growth of our industry and its workforce."

The Congressional Optics & Photonics Caucus serves as a platform to educate policymakers on the economic impact and strategic importance of the optics industry, advocate federal investment in research and development, and support workforce training programs to meet growing demand for skilled technicians and engineers. Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly serves as an honorary co-chair of the caucus.
