Laser Focus World is an industry bedrock—first published in 1965 and still going strong. We publish original articles about cutting-edge advances in lasers, optics, photonics, sensors, and quantum technologies, as well as test and measurement, and the shift currently underway to usher in the photonic integrated circuits, optical interconnects, and copackaged electronics and photonics to deliver the speed and efficiency essential for data centers of the future.

Our 80,000 qualified print subscribers—and 130,000 12-month engaged online audience—trust us to dive in and provide original journalism you won’t find elsewhere covering key emerging areas such as laser-driven inertial confinement fusion, lasers in space, integrated photonics, chipscale lasers, LiDAR, metasurfaces, high-energy laser weaponry, photonic crystals, and quantum computing/sensors/communications. We cover the innovations driving these markets.

In ancient Greece they did clever math without algebra. You can too thinking only in arithmetic!

By: PRLog
Is the world insisting that you master algebra to use and maybe buy a spreadsheet that relies on it? Would you rather have fast and easy using concepts you know to do the math of a typical household? Guess what's new? You've got a friend in T/Maker!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sept. 28, 2025 - PRLog -- T/Maker is a program you can download and use. I am pleased to offer it and happy for new users -- as many as possible. But my goal is more than what I could achieve myself. There are far too many people who do not understand algebra and have no computerized software to assist them along two dimensions. With T/Maker they could do the calculations of algebraic spreadsheets in the language of arithmetic. It puzzles me that no large software company or funding organization has ever attempted this. My hope is one of them will join me in this pursuit. It's certainly true my path to this result has been lengthy and filled with twists and turns and unlikely circumstances. I hope you find something interesting here. Once you get into it, it's a lot more fun than juggling bingo-like names in bird nests of parentheses!

An Important Point: The tens of millions of people who do not understand algebra have certainly not been getting their share of all the funds devoted to improving the numeracy of the population. Overall indicators continue to decline. The 2023 assessment of 4,600 US adults showed Americans scoring at the lowest numeracy level or beneath it rose to 34% from 29% (2017). The national report card (9/9/2025) shows the math abilities of high school seniors at a record low. Only 22% are considered proficient. Imagine how relatively few peanuts it would cost to put a more polished version of T/Maker that's easier to install on a broader collection of devices. A Google or Microsoft or Oracle could do it for the public good. Maybe you should suggest it to them.
