Foot and Ankle Center Offers Tips for Preventing Foot and Ankle Injuries in Student Athletes

Utah-based podiatrist emphasizes early prevention and expert podiatric care as school sports resume this fall to avoid common foot and ankle injuries among young athletes.

(PRUnderground) August 25th, 2025

Dr. Landon Cameron and the team at Foot & Ankle Center provide comprehensive podiatric care to patients at their Mesquite, NV, and St. George, UT, offices. With back-to-school season in full swing and school sports resuming, Dr. Cameron anticipates an uptick in foot and ankle injuries among student athletes. Because many of these injuries are avoidable with proper care, he is raising awareness about the importance of preventing foot and ankle injuries before they sideline students this school year.

Dr. Cameron founded Foot & Ankle Center, which offers expert care for various foot and ankle injuries and chronic conditions, including stress fractures, ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, and diabetic neuropathy. While a skilled surgeon, he prefers to take a conservative approach to helping young athletes heal and return to the field. This approach includes encouraging parents, coaches, and students to be proactive about foot health as part of their back-to-school routine.

Dr. Cameron’s recommendations for avoiding injuries include the following:

  • Choose the Right Footwear: Make sure athletic shoes match the sport and provide proper arch support, cushioning, and stability. Avoid hand-me-downs or overly worn shoes.
  • Stretch and Warm Up: Stretching the calves, ankles, and feet before practices and games to prevent muscle strains and joint injuries.
  • Don’t Play Through Pain: What seems like a minor tweak could be the start of a serious condition. Students should speak up early and rest when needed.
  • Monitor for Overuse Injuries: Don’t forget to rest. Sports like soccer, track, and basketball can lead to stress fractures or tendonitis without proper breaks between activities.

As a board-certified podiatrist, Dr. Cameron also recommends students visit their doctor for a pre-season exam. “A simple in-office evaluation can reveal risks parents and coaches might overlook,” said Dr. Cameron. “If we catch issues like flat feet, or ankle weakness that could lead to injuries before the season kicks off, we can recommend physical therapy, custom orthotics, or other adjustments to keep kids active and injury-free.”

Foot & Ankle Center has long been a leader in diagnosing and treating pediatric and adolescent foot conditions across Utah. To learn more about Foot & Ankle Center or to schedule a back-to-school foot exam, call 435-714-6996 or visit www.MyFootDoc.com.
