Development Pattern And Trend Of China’s Seamless Steel Pipe Industry

In recent years, China’s seamless steel pipe industry has witnessed the fastest development in history. For six consecutive years, the production and sales have been booming, the product structure has been significantly adjusted, and the self-sufficiency rate of steel pipes has been increasing year by year. In 2004, the steel pipe production reached 21.23 million tons, accounting for more than 25% of the global steel pipe production. The technological transformation and investment have reached a new historical high, and the technical equipment has been greatly improved. Two million ton seamless steel pipe manufacturers have emerged, joining the ranks of the world’s largest steel pipe groups.

Like the development of China’s iron and steel industry, although the steel pipe industry has made remarkable achievements in recent years, accounting for more than 1/4 of the world’s output, there is still a certain gap with the international advanced level in terms of technical equipment, product quality and product grade, economic scale of enterprises, and major technical and economic indicators.

By analyzing the development trend and pattern of relevant industries in the seamless steel pipe industry, as well as the achievements and problems of China’s seamless steel pipe industry, we realize that the domestic market has certain advantages and development space, and the international market space is growing, mainly relying on competition to improve market share. In order to further enhance the competitiveness, we must seize the current good opportunity to narrow the gap between the products and the international advanced level in terms of variety, quality and cost as soon as possible, and make the production equipment and technology reach the international advanced level as soon as possible, so that China can truly become a strong steel pipe production country in the world.Seamless steel pipe is one of the important raw materials for national economic construction. It is an economic type steel product, which is widely used in petroleum, electric power, chemical industry, coal, machinery, military industry, aerospace and other industries. All countries in the world, especially industrial developed countries, attach great importance to the production and trade of seamless steel pipe.

In 2004, the output of seamless steel tubes and welded steel tubes in China was the first in the world. In 2003, seamless steel tubes had become a net export product of China. Since 2000, China’s steel pipe industry has been developing at a high speed for five consecutive years. The growth of steel pipe production has almost kept pace with the growth of finished steel products nationwide, that is, the average annual growth of finished steel products is 21.64%, of which steel pipe is growing at a high speed of 20.8%, and the pipe/material ratio remains at about 7%.

From 1981 to 2004, the total change trend of China’s seamless steel pipe production and apparent consumption was stable and synchronous growth. Before 1999, the consumption had been higher than the production and had a certain fluctuation (about 800000 tons). Before 2002, the apparent consumption was slightly greater than the domestic production, which was basically flat in 2003. In 2004, the production was slightly greater than the apparent consumption. It is expected that the production will begin to significantly exceed the apparent consumption in 2005.
